Lagos State Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu has denied claims of any discord between himself and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu following widespread speculation fueled by a viral video.

The governor addressed the issue during an interview with the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) on Sunday.

His comments came just hours after he and other members of the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) reportedly paid a visit to President Tinubu at his residence in Ikoyi, Lagos.

Media speculation about a potential fallout between the two leaders intensified after an incident at the commissioning of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway on May 31. In viral footage from the event, President Tinubu was seen exchanging handshakes with several dignitaries in the front row but appeared to bypass Governor Sanwo-Olu, moving directly to greet the next guest.

Further questions were raised days later when Sanwo-Olu was absent at the commissioning of the Lekki Deep Sea Port Access Road at the Dangote Refinery, an event held within Lagos State. According to the presidency, governors from Plateau, Abia, Enugu, Ogun, Borno, and Kaduna states were in attendance.

Addressing the rumours directly, Governor Sanwo-Olu stated emphatically that there is no rift between him and the president.

“Did you see any discord? Did you see any? Can’t you see I’m smiling? There’s none,” he said.

He dismissed the speculation as baseless, saying some people are reading too much into public events.

“You know, there are people who believe they are more Catholic than the Pope. There are things you see people do; they cry more than the bereaved,” he remarked.

He described his relationship with President Tinubu as strong and familial.

“You know, father and son are things we always, always ensure we are clear. There’s nothing at all. He is my father, he is my leader, and we are grateful that he gave us the audience today to come in and say hello to him,” Sanwo-Olu added.
