Portugal head coach Roberto Martinez has confirmed that Cristiano Ronaldo, now 40, has no set timeline for retirement.
Ronaldo, who has amassed a staggering 219 caps and 136 goals for Portugal, remains a central figure heading into the UEFA Nations League semi-final clash against Germany, where he will once again wear the captain’s armband.
Despite intense criticism over his move to the Saudi Pro League and questions surrounding his longevity, Martinez maintains that Ronaldo’s professionalism and influence, both on and off the pitch, are vital to the squad’s structure and development.
“On the field, he is meticulously monitored. Off the field, the players need to show team values, exemplary commitment,” Martinez told Sport TV.
“When we talk about players like Joao Neves and Mora, having the opportunity to speak to Cristiano helps their performance in the future with the national team.”
Martinez stressed that Ronaldo’s future isn’t scripted, saying:
“It’s like talking about the weather, everyone has an opinion. No one has a plan, not even Cristiano himself.”
While Ronaldo’s place remains significant, the Portugal coach made it clear that “no one has a guaranteed spot” in the team, insisting that selection is based strictly on merit, even for a five-time Ballon d’Or winner.
Ronaldo’s club future also remains uncertain, with speculation surrounding a potential departure from Al-Nassr as a free agent.
