About the role
Canadian Blood Services is looking for a Temporary part-time Laboratory Assistant to join our dynamic Donor Relations & Collections East team.
The Donor Relations & Collections East team is responsible for supporting Canadian Blood Services by processing the whole blood collections to the final product and the distribution of these products to the customers of Canadian Blood Services. In this role, you will be working on the frontlines, assisting in the production of blood components that provide life-saving treatments for Canadians.
Formula for success
- Drawing on your knowledge and experience in laboratory functions, you will be receiving, assessing, and producing whole blood, apheresis platelets and plasma into requested blood components.
- Utilizing your knowledge and understanding of blood component production, you will be assisting the laboratory manager in the development and evaluation of procedures.
- Using your excellent organizational skills, you will be maintaining stock of supplies in component laboratory, including fractionation products, red blood cells and platelets.
- Leveraging your attention to detail, you will be involved in the maintenance of appropriate documentation and records related to inventory in compliance with Canadian Blood Services operational procedures and work instructions.
- Applying your ability to be proactive and ensure excellence, you will be performing routine maintenance of equipment and work areas to ensure safety and quality of blood products and maintaining temperature records of laboratory equipment.
- You will issue blood and related products to our customers such as provincial hospitals and other blood centers as well as issuing blood products to Public Health and outside agencies for quality control.
Desired education and skills
- Completion of secondary education and minimum 1 year, recent, laboratory work experience or an equivalent combination. BSc or College Diploma would be considered an asset.
- Technical skills including MS Office, and relevant computer skills may be required.
- Must have good oral and written communication skills.

What you can expect
- Shifts/hours – must be flexible to accommodate assigned shifts which are based on operational needs; length of shifts varies according to the event which takes place at Canadian Blood Services fixed and mobile donor centers. Shifts include days, evenings, weekends, and statutory holidays.
- Physical requirements – ability to lift weight up to 10 kg (22 lbs.).
This position must meet the Trustworthiness and Reliability Verification requirements of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission and is subject to criminal records and employment verification checks.
