<p><b>Role:</b></p>
<p> Heavy Duty Mechanics (HDM) perform major and minor repairs, overhauls and servicing on all types of locomotives.</p>
<p> Critical performance areas include the following but may vary depending on the location and circumstances: </p>
<ul>
<li>Inspect, service and maintain locomotives, in accordance with federal and company regulations, including changing oil or repairing, replacing, cleaning and adjusting parts.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>Diagnose diesel engine malfunctions and making required repairs.</li>
<li>Assemble and start engines.</li>
<li>Use electric and oxy-acetylene welding equipment, lubrication equipment and other vehicle repair tools and equipment, and operate said tools and machinery in a safe and effective manner.</li>
<li>Prepare inspection, maintenance, and work reports, and record details on prescribed forms in accordance with established procedures.</li>
<li>Operate locomotive on shop tracks.</li>
<li>Test locomotives on shop track after repair.</li>
</ul>
<p><b>Working Conditions:</b></p>
<ul>
<li>Ability to work irregular shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays, and occasional overtime.</li>
<li>Shop environment.</li>
<li>Occasional travel.</li>
</ul>
<p><b>Employment Requirements:</b></p>
<ul>
<li>High School diploma or equivalent General Education Diploma (GED).</li>
<li>Diesel mechanic experience and/or Diesel mechanic diploma</li>
<li>Valid driver&#8217;s license.</li>
<li>Using measuring devices and understanding visual displays.</li>
<li>Basic technical knowledge of diesel mechanics.</li>
<li>Good hand-eye coordination.</li>
<li>Frequent lifting/carrying up to 50 pounds (22 kg).</li>
</ul>
<p><b>Assets:</b></p>
<ul>
<li>Valid Heavy Duty Mechanic provincial certificate &#8211; Red Seal or Journeyman.</li>
<li>Valid commercial driver&#8217;s license for the class and type of equipment operated.</li>
<li>Ability to certify company equipment in accordance with provincial standards.</li>
<li>Experience troubleshooting hydraulic and electronic systems.</li>
<li>Welding skills.</li>
</ul>

<p><b>Training</b></p>
<p> Successful candidates will receive on-the-job training, both theoretical and practical instructions. Depending on your level of experience, candidates may receive a 4-year on-the-job apprenticeship program and will attend a series of courses at your work location in Canada. Training will include locomotive components, locomotive control systems, locomotive air brakes, locomotive start up, basic diesel electric systems and CN maintenance regulations. Truck and traction motors, event recorders, as well as fuel, oil, water and air systems plus power assembly will also be covered. Successful completion of this program is essential for performance of future duties.</p>
