<p><strong>Skepta </strong>is a British grime singer, rapper, record producer, and songwriter known for his self-promotional and anti-establishment lyrics. With four studio albums and five mixtapes, this Tottenham-born record producer and music video director has pushed his way up the music industry ladder with tenacity.</p>
<p>His status as a significant grime musician in British popular culture won him a spot on Debrett’s 2017 list of the most influential individuals in the UK. He rose to prominence in the grime genre after winning an MC fight against over 300 competitors. His smash tune ‘Private Caller’ helped him gain popularity throughout Greater London.</p>

<p>Joseph Olaitan Adenuga Jr. was born on September 19, 1982, in Tottenham, North London, to Nigerian parents of Yoruba (paternal) and Igbo (maternal) descent. He is the eldest of four siblings and was raised on the Meridian Walk Estate in Tottenham. His brother, Jamie Adenuga, better known as Jme, is a musician. Skepta attended Winchmore Council School.</p>
<h2>Career</h2>
<p>Skepta began his music career by emceeing rap performances and appearing on pirate radio stations, inspired by hip-hop music from the United States and the United Kingdom. He previously worked as a DJ with Meridian group, a grime group located in Tottenham. During this time, he released several instrumentals, including ‘DTI (Pirate Station Anthem)’ and ‘Private Caller.’</p>
<p>After Meridian combo split up in 2005, Skepta, his brother Jme, and fellow rapper Joseph Bamber founded Roll Deep, a grime combo.</p>
<p>Skepta and Jme founded the English grime group and record label ‘Boy Better Know’ in 2006. It was established in North London as an independent record label. The collective’s members also used this record label to publish their music.</p>
<p>Following the formation of ‘Boy Better Know,’ Skepta competed with fellow MC Devilman for the DVD ‘Lord of the Mics 2.’ The clash is still regarded as one of the most significant in grime history. Following the victorious clash, he released a mixtape called ‘Joseph Junior Adenuga.’</p>
<p>On September 17, 2007, he released his debut album, ‘Greatest Hits,’ on ‘Boy Better Know.’ On September 15, 2008, he released ‘Rolex Sweep’ as a digital download. It became the lead single for his second studio album, ‘Microphone Champion.’ ‘Rolex Sweep’ peaked at number 86 on the UK Singles Chart.</p>

<p>His third studio album, ‘Doin’ It Again,’ was released by Boy Better Know on January 31, 2011. Before the album’s release, five singles were released, four of which reached the UK Top 40 Singles chart. The main song, ‘Bad Boy,’ was released as a digital download on March 15, 2010.</p>
<p>The second single, “Rescue Me,” was released as a digital download on June 27, 2010. On October 17, 2010, the third single, ‘Cross My Heart,’ which included vocals from vocalist Preeya Kalidas, was also made available as a digital download.</p>
<p>The fourth single, ‘So Alive,’ was released on February 6, 2011. The fifth single, “Amnesia,” was released on February 27, 2011. It peaked at No. 164 on the UK Singles Chart. ‘Rescue Me’ was the most successful, peaking at number 14.</p>
<p>In 2012, he released two songs from his fourth album, ‘Hold On’ and ‘Make Peace Not War.’ The singles discovered were among the top 40 charting singles in the United Kingdom. Following a lackluster response to his first two singles, he released the mixtape ‘Blacklisted’ on December 2, 2012.</p>

<p>On June 8, 2014, he released a single titled ‘That’s Not Me,’ which included his brother Jme. The track reached number 21 in the UK charts. It later became the lead single from his fourth album, ‘Konnichiwa.’ He also recorded a verse for Meridian Dan’s remix of ‘German Whip’ the same month.</p>

<p>Skepta pleaded guilty to deliberately inflicting injury after punching a man in the mouth during a fight at a Melbourne nightclub in January 2016. There was no conviction, but he was fined $2,500 and forced to reimburse the victim $10,000.</p>
<p>In 2009, Skepta was convicted of common assault in London and fined for assault causing actual bodily harm in Cyprus in 2006, which he said occurred after a large group of individuals racially harassed him and his companions, and a brawl broke out.</p>
