The Finance Area at the Haskayne School of Business, University of Calgary invites applications for a Canada Research Chair (CRC) Tier II position in FinTech. The Chair will establish an active research program that focusses on FinTech, broadly defined. Examples of research streams include: decentralized finance, high frequency trading, applications of artificial intelligence and machine learning to finance, cryptocurrencies, and market microstructure.

The successful candidate will be appointed at the rank of Assistant Professor (tenure track) or Associate Professor (with tenure), depending on their qualifications, and will be nominated for a CRC Tier II. All candidates are expected to have a PhD in Finance, Economics, or a closely related field. Further information about the Canada Research Chairs Program can be found on the Government of Canada’s CRC , including eligibility criteria. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2024.

Candidates at the assistant professor rank must have:

  • A burgeoning reputation in finance or economics, with a focus in Fintech (broadly defined), as evidenced by:
  • At least one top-quality peer-reviewed article (commensurate with years of research experience), as evidenced by relevant bibliometrics (citations to the article, journal rankings, etc.);
  • A strong pipeline of top papers submitted to and under revision at high ranking journals;
  • Presentations at high quality conferences.
  • An interest in research translation;
  • A demonstrated ability to teach in undergraduate or graduate programs;
  • A willingness to supervise graduate students;
  • A willingness to provide service to the university or profession.

Candidates at the associate professor rank must have:

  • An international reputation in finance or economics, with a focus on Fintech (broadly defined), as evidenced by:
  • Multiple top-quality peer-reviewed articles (commensurate with years of research experience) and invited revisions as evidenced by relevant bibliometrics (citations to the article, journal rankings, etc.);
  • Demonstrated impact on the profession in terms of citations and professional activities (refereeing and editorial boards, presentations or invited discussions at high-quality conferences, etc.);
  • An interest in research translation;
  • A demonstrated ability of effective teaching and graduate student supervision;
  • A demonstrated ability to provide service to the university and profession.

The successful candidate will dedicate their time to establishing a high-impact research program; submit scholarly works to high-quality journals; engage in outreach activities; contribute to teaching and graduate student supervision; and provide service to the university and within the profession. The position has an attractive remuneration and benefits package, including dedicated research funding and a 50% teaching reduction (two-course load).
