JOB SUMMARY

The W.I.O.A. Youth Career Coach provides services for at-risk youth with a focus on education, skill development, work experience and support for youth to successfully transition to careers and productive adulthood. The Career Coach is responsible for all participant outreach, intake, objective assessment, enrollment, support, and follow-up services pertinent to the specific activities assigned for the year. The program serves in-school and out-of-school youth through Workforce Innovation and Opportunity act funds using the Jobs for Michigan Graduates/Jobs for America’s Graduates program model. This is a grant funded position.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Recruit and enroll students to the program targeting youth who are at risk of dropping out of school prior to graduation, those who are recent dropouts or who are most likely to be unemployed after graduation, are undecided on a career path with no plans of post-secondary education.
  • Assess student academic levels and coordinate remediation and/or tutoring required for students to improve their basic education skills toward graduation.
  • Coordinate career counseling activities and establish student objectives leading to the attainment of a secondary school diploma or its recognized equivalent, or a recognized post-secondary credential.
  • Deliver the curriculum developed by JAG National, monitor student progress to assure mastery of all competencies.
  • Assist with program recruitment by developing and maintaining a strong relationship with the Eaton County court system
  • Organize the establishment of a highly motivational, career-oriented student-led organization for the purposes of developing leadership, community service and teamwork skills.
  • Develop and maintain an advisory committee to assist in the recruitment, screening, and selecting students who are most in need of services. (In-School posting only)
  • Provide mentoring and refer to school or community-based services as needed to overcome the barriers to successful completion of individual objectives.
  • Attend JMG staff development experiences and staff meetings. Assist with special events or peer-based training as needed.
  • Develop work-based learning and/or job shadowing experiences linked to the JAG Model curriculum to enhance student learning and occupational specific skills in their chosen career field.
  • Maintain contact with non-seniors during the summer months to increase the probability of their returning to the program and graduating. (In-School posting only)
  • Provide personal and confidential information for screening in accordance with local and state laws and organizational policies governing those working directly with students in schools.
  • Complete and regularly maintain all paper and electronic documentation as required by Peckham, CAMW!, JMG, and the program.
  • Ensure that all required documentation is obtained and maintained according to contract requirements.
  • Exceed all contract performance goals.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • 2-3 years of experience working with youth or career coaching
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office

PREFERRED QUALFICIATIONS

  • Bachelors Degree in a related field
  • Previous experience in W.I.O.A. or W.I.A. Youth programs.
