Real Betis manager Manuel Pellegrini has dismissed claims that his side are heavy underdogs against Chelsea in Wednesday night’s UEFA Conference League final.
Speaking at the pre-match press conference, the experienced Chilean tactician, who will be overseeing his first major European final, acknowledged the scheduling advantage his side holds.
Betis last played on Friday against Valencia, while Chelsea faced a high-stakes fixture away to Nottingham Forest on Sunday.
“I read what Enzo said and I completely agree with him. In football, you can’t give your opponent any kind of advantage,” Pellegrini said.
“They had a tough game on Sunday to get into the Champions League and they did; I’m very happy for him, but it’s no excuse.”
While conceding that the additional rest gives Betis a slight edge, Pellegrini emphasized that Chelsea remain a formidable force.
“They’re used to playing every three days. I’m convinced they’re going to be a very tough opponent, at their usual high level.”
Pellegrini also touched on his personal relationship with Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca, with whom he worked during their time at West Ham.
“We talked a lot about football. I sent him a message early in the league phase saying we’d see each other in the final. I congratulated him on Sunday. I’m very happy to face him.”
In terms of approach, the 70-year-old remained tight-lipped about tactical specifics but made clear Betis would stick to their identity.
