Real Madrid are aggressively overhauling their backline this summer and veteran defender David Alaba is reportedly next casualty of that restructuring.
According to Cadena SER, the club offered to terminate the Austrian’s contract in January, including a payout covering his remaining salary for the season, an offer Alaba rejected.
The 32-year-old has endured a difficult spell since sustaining a serious knee injury that sidelined him for 13 months.
His form upon return has also raised doubts over his future under incoming new manager Xabi Alonso.
With Trent Alexander-Arnold already signed from Liverpool and Dean Huijsen confirmed from Bournemouth, Real are also closing in on Benfica left-back Álvaro Carreras.
These additions, combined with the emergence of Raúl Asencio and established options like Antonio Rüdiger, Éder Militão, and Aurélien Tchouaméni (when deployed as a center-back), leave Alaba down the pecking order.
Alaba’s versatility once made him an asset across the backline, but his recent performances, notably a disappointing outing at left-back against Arsenal in the Champions League, suggest he may not fit into Alonso’s tactical plans, if the coach sticks with the three-at-the-back system that brought him success at Bayer Leverkusen.
Alaba is among the highest earners at the Bernabéu and has one year left on his deal.
Unless he regains form quickly, Madrid could revisit efforts to part ways this summer.
