<p><b>Job description</b>: The Plant Manager is accountable for all production activities by leading and developing site floor leadership staff to optimize production volumes, achieve safety goals, and meet departmental cost objectives while producing potato products that meet and exceed the quality expectations of our customers.</p>
<p> Relationships and Contacts</p>
<p> This position reports to the Director of Operations. The job incumbent will directly supervise the Process Manager and Floor Managers. This position requires interaction with the Quality Assurance Department, Health and Safety Department, Maintenance Department, Finance Department, Shipping and Logistics Department, Human Resources Department, Field Department, Sales Department, union executive, and employees. Assume food safety responsibility in the absence of the Director of Operations.</p>
<p> <b>Major Responsibilities:</b> </p>
<ul>
<li>Motivate employees to embrace the Leadership Values and behaviors.</li>
<li>Provide guidance and supervision to Process Manager, Shift Managers and Packaging Supervisors so that Standard Operating Procedures are understood and followed.</li>
<li>Foster and maintain a positive labour relations environment by ensuring that all employees are treated with respect, grievances are dealt with in a timely manner, and employees are communicated with in an open manner.</li>
<li>Assist the Director of Operations with developing a cohesive, competent management team and planning for capable management succession by effectively acquiring, developing, and motivating manufacturing personnel.</li>
<li>Monitor production inputs and outputs to minimize product loss.</li>
<li>Control departmental operating costs.</li>
<li>Ensure all product orders are produced on time with no shortfall in quality or quantity.</li>
<li>Encourage the use of Six Sigma and Downtime Analysis to improve product quality and reduce the cost of production.</li>
<li>Participate in the review and recommendation for capital improvements for equipment and plant facilities.</li>
<li>Ensure plant compliance to Government regulations and Company specifications for HACCP, Sanitation, and Safety through supportive collaboration with the appropriate personnel.</li>
</ul>
<p> Health and Safety Responsibilities: </p>
<ul>
<li>Using or wearing the protective equipment designated by the accident prevention policy.</li>
<li>Follow safe work procedures, rules and policies.</li>
<li>Ensuring employees are not performing work with faulty equipment or in violation of safe work practices.</li>
<li>Supervising and directing employees when doing hazardous work.</li>
<li>Ensuring all protective devices and equipment are properly used and maintained.</li>
<li>Ensuring employees are thoroughly familiar with safe work methods for jobs being performed under their supervision and insisting on their use at all times.</li>
<li>Developing a proper perspective among their employees toward accident prevention through training and personal example.</li>
<li>Initiating appropriate action promptly to correct any unsafe situation, condition, tool, equipment, process or practice that they may be aware of. Initiate all follow-up required to ensure completion.</li>
<li>Training and instructing new, transferred or loaned employees with respect to Safety Rules and Procedures in their area, including the issuing of personal protective equipment.</li>
<li>Ensure that good housekeeping is maintained at all times.</li>
<li>Enforcing awareness of all Accident Prevention Rules in Provincial Health and Safety legislation.</li>
<li>Reporting all accidents or injuries to your supervisor immediately.</li>
</ul>
<p> Food Safety Responsibilities: </p>
<ul>
<li>Commitment to Quality System Policy</li>
<li>Enforce quality and food safety programs within the role</li>
<li>Communication of food safety issues to related department and action within the role</li>
<li>Active participation in food safety, food security, health, sanitation, hygiene and quality program within the role</li>
<li>Perform applicable food safety duties in the absence of the Director of Operations.</li>
</ul>
<p> Qualifications and Abilities: </p>
<ul>
<li>Post-secondary education in one of the following disciplines: food science, business, engineering, or operations management.</li>
<li>5 or more years of managerial leadership in a food processing industry.</li>
<li>3 or more years of experience in a senior management role within a unionized work environment.</li>
<li>Six Sigma training and experience would be an asset.</li>
<li>The successful candidate will be results-oriented, thrive in a fast paced, demanding environment, and have the ability to develop positive working relationships with associates and employees.</li>
<li>Strong verbal and written communication skills;</li>
<li>Proven decision making ability using various analytical tools (variance reports, downtime analysis, SWOT analysis, Six Sigma metrics, etc.);</li>
<li>Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to manage conflict and build teams;</li>
<li>Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Oracle;</li>
<li>A proven track record of being pro-active and taking initiative;</li>
<li>The flexibility to adapt to a 24 hour, 7 day operation schedule;</li>
<li>Knowledge of HACCP and Health and Safety regulations.</li>
</ul>
