Nottingham Forest head coach Nuno Espirito Santo has paid a heartfelt tribute to Taiwo Awoniyi, describing the Nigerian striker as a vital presence in the team, both on and off the pitch.
Awoniyi is currently recovering after undergoing emergency abdominal surgery, following a collision with the goalpost in Forest’s recent Premier League draw against Leicester City.
The incident left the forward in an induced coma, sparking concern across the football community.
Ahead of their next match, Forest players wore warm-up shirts with Awoniyi’s name and number, alongside a message that read: “We’re all with you, Taiwo.”
Santo, speaking via the club’s official channels, praised the 26-year-old’s positive influence on the squad:
“Since the beginning of preparations, T has been in our thoughts because of how serious the situation is. The players were determined to perform for him.
“He’s someone we all admire, his smile is contagious, and we miss him. The team gave everything for him today, and we’re proud.”
With one match left and Forest still in contention for a Champions League place, Santo acknowledged the remarkable journey:
“At the start of the season, nobody expected us to be in this position. Now, we have one last game at the City Ground, and it’s huge. We’re aiming for something special.”
