Real Madrid have entered the race for Athletic Club winger Nico Williams, with Marca reporting that the Spanish giants are prepared to activate his €58 million release clause.
The 22-year-old had long been on Barcelona’s radar, but interest has cooled following recent comments by club president Joan Laporta.
He stated: “He was one of the candidates last summer… but I think at this moment we are evaluating other options.”
Williams signed a contract extension with Athletic Club last summer that included the current buyout clause, and has since continued to impress, making him one of La Liga’s most sought-after talents.
While Barcelona have shifted focus elsewhere, Madrid now see an opportunity to pounce, though they are likely to face competition from Arsenal, who are also in the market for an attacker.
