Lionel Messi marked his return to Inter Miami’s starting lineup with a goal in their dramatic 2-1 win over Atlanta United on Monday morning.
Substitute Fafà Picault sealed the win in the 89th minute with his first goal for the club.
Messi, making just his second MLS regular-season appearance of the campaign, struck in the 20th minute after pressing high to dispossess Bartosz Slisz before dribbling past defenders and delicately chipping goalkeeper Brad Guzan.
The goal canceled out Emmanuel Latte Lath’s opener for Atlanta in the 11th minute.
Despite Guzan’s six saves, Miami found a late winner when Jordi Alba’s outswinging cross found Picault, who outmuscled his marker to head home past a wrong-footed Guzan.
The result extends Atlanta’s winless run to three matches.
Miami head coach Javier Mascherano praised Messi’s impact and leadership. “Leo is the best in the history of the sport.
“His goal was a moment of brilliance. But we are also happy for Fafà, who worked hard and took his chance,” Mascherano said.
