Manchester United are weighing a summer move for Wolves forward Matheus Cunha, with the Brazilian viewed as a ready-made solution to two of the club’s biggest problems.
These problems include lack of goals and tactical compatibility with new manager Ruben Amorim’s system.
Cunha has emerged as one of the most productive attackers in the Premier League over the past two seasons, contributing 37 goals and assists, nearly 40% of Wolves’ total output, despite playing for a bottom-half side.
With 14 goals this season, he is on course to surpass the single-season scoring records of other Brazilian greats in the league such as Roberto Firmino and Gabriel Martinelli.
United’s goal return under Amorim has been dismal, averaging just 1.2 goals per league game.
The manager has expressed frustration over the team’s lack of attacking efficiency, leading to decisions such as loaning out Marcus Rashford and Antony.
Rasmus Hojlund, the club’s high-profile striker signing, has struggled to justify his price tag, while Bruno Fernandes has expressed interest in a deeper midfield role, creating a vacuum in the advanced midfield positions.
Cunha reportedly fits Amorim’s preferred 3-4-2-1 formation, currently deployed under Vitor Pereira at Wolves.
The 25-year-old operates primarily as a left-sided No.10, capable of both scoring and creating.
His familiarity with the system, versatility in attack, and ability to link play and break defensive lines make him a tactical asset United currently lack.
He also brings Premier League experience and maturity, following a difficult stint at Atletico Madrid.
According to reports, United have placed Cunha on a shortlist that also includes Liam Delap.
However, the Wolves man is seen as a more immediate upgrade, with a £62 million release clause significantly cheaper than Viktor Gyokeres’ £80 million valuation.
