<p>Plateau State Governor, <strong>Caleb Mutfwang</strong>, has expressed deep concern over the increasing number of school dropouts in mining communities, blaming the crisis on the growing scourge of <strong>illegal mining.</strong></p>
<p>Reaffirming his a<strong>dministration’s commitment to tackling the issue, the governor emphasized the far-reaching consequences of illegal mining</strong> on both education and the environment.</p>
<p>Speaking during a Sunday service at COCIN Headquarters Church in Jos, he called on religious and community leaders to support government efforts in addressing the challenge. He stressed that illegal mining is not only ravaging the land but also depriving children of their future.</p>
<p>Governor Mutfwang revealed that he recently ordered a statewide raid on illegal mining camps, urging affected communities to view it as a necessary intervention rather than an attack on their livelihoods.</p>
<p><em>“Last week, I directed a crackdown on all illegal mining camps across the state. I urge you to help our people understand that this is not about taking away their means of survival—illegal mining has devastating, long-term consequences that we cannot ignore,”</em> he stated.</p>
<p>His remarks were reinforced by alarming statistics showing a sharp decline in school enrolment in major mining areas, including Bassa, Riyom, Jos South, and Barkin Ladi.</p>
<p><em>“Our research has revealed a disturbing reality—classrooms in these areas are increasingly empty. Just last month, we uncovered cases of parents in Bassa sending their children into child labor instead of school. We are tracking those responsible,”</em> the governor added.</p>
<h3><strong>Community Engagement and Government Action</strong></h3>
<p>Governor Mutfwang called on local leaders to play an active role in educating their communities about the dangers of illegal mining. He announced plans for a statewide awareness campaign, in collaboration with religious institutions, to curb the crisis.</p>
<p><em>“I appeal to all of you, as leaders, to take this message to your people. May God burden your hearts with the urgency of this issue so that we can rise above affiliations and act together. The church will play a critical role, and we will stand firmly behind our religious leaders in this mission,”</em> he declared.</p>
<p>Beyond its impact on education, the governor also highlighted the environmental and security risks associated with illegal mining. He warned that unchecked mining activities were degrading farmlands, destabilizing communities, and even threatening government institutions.</p>
<p>With the backing of religious leaders, local authorities, and a determined government, Mutfwang vowed to restore order and ensure that children return to school instead of the mines.</p>
