Job description: A unique opportunity has arisen for a commercial lawyer to join a boutique hospitality group as their first Head of Legal. The portfolio currently comprises exclusive members clubs, retail, and homeware brands. This newly created position will steer the legal strategy of the group as they embark on ambitious expansion plans, spanning both the UK and international territories.

As Head of Legal, you will be at the forefront of establishing and developing the in-house legal function. Reporting into the CFO and collaborating closely with the C-Suite you will be an integral part of the senior leadership team. The role centers on advising on a broad range of legal matters across Corporate, Commercial, Real Estate, Licensing, Regulatory/Compliance and Employment for the entire group. You will be a trusted advisor across the business and embedded into activities across the business.

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the focal point for commercial contract review and negotiations, collaborating closely with department heads.
  • Institute and manage a proactive contract management and governance system, emphasising standardisation, process improvement, and use of technology.
  • Lead corporate activities, including re-financing, M&A, company secretarial matters, share issuance, and corporate structuring, with oversight of external counsel.
  • Offer guidance on regulatory and compliance issues, both domestically and internationally, leveraging external counsel support.
  • Drive efficiency in the use of external counsel, ensuring optimal value and expertise are derived from engagements.
  • Safeguard the business by effectively managing and communicating legal risks, collaborating across functions to navigate challenges.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of policies and procedures aligned with strategic objectives.

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 5-8 years’ PQE, combining law firm and in-house experience across commercial and corporate matters. You will need to be a highly commercial problem solver with strong communication skills. While experience within Leisure/Hospitality or related industries is advantageous, it is not a prerequisite for this position.
