Supporters of popular radio presenter Alhaji Oriyomi Hamzat have taken to the streets of Ibadan to protest his continued detention in connection with the tragic stampede at a children’s funfair.

The incident, which claimed the lives of at least 36 children, has led to murder charges against Hamzat, Queen Naomi—the event organizer—and others involved.

In a viral video, the protesters, primarily women and mothers, expressed their outrage over the arrest, demanding the immediate release of Hamzat. Many were seen chanting support for the media personality, “Free Oriyomi Hamzat.”

One protester voiced the sentiment of many, saying, “His only offense was providing for the needy. Oriyomi Hamzat must not be jailed!”

The tragic stampede occurred after an overwhelming crowd of over 7,500 people showed up for an event designed for 5,000 children. The gathering spiralled out of control before security measures could be fully implemented, leading to the devastating loss of lives.

Hamzat, who was present at the event, has been credited in viral footage for his efforts to rescue victims and disperse the crowd. Despite this, his arrest has drawn sharp criticism from supporters who argue that he was unfairly implicated.

As the case unfolds, Hamzat’s supporters remain steadfast in their calls for justice, insisting that his detention is unwarranted.
