Job description: Are you looking for a role that will challenge you? Our Chalk River location is looking for a Drill Rig Operator to help conduct environmental surveys using appropriate and careful sampling and measurement techniques, following strict procedures. .
What will you be doing !
- Operating drilling equipment to collect samples of soil and rock, and to install observation wells in the boreholes for the collection of groundwater information.
- Assisting in periodic groundwater sampling and measurement surveys.
- Operating and maintaining both rotary and percussive drill rigs.
- Regular well maintenance and verification of well integrity to ensure preservation of groundwater and ability to take representative samples.
- Assisting in the regular collection of well water level measurements from over 2000 wells across the Chalk River Site as directed by the site geohydrologists allowing accurate mapping of groundwater flows and mapping of known contamination plumes.
- Assisting in well clean-outs prior to sampling both for the semi-annual operation control monitoring and for the routine contamination monitoring reports to ensure the accurate collection of groundwater samples for analysis.
- Collecting contamination readings of soil and vegetation.
- Maintaining small equipment and preparation of equipment such as probes to support work.
- Snow removal (e.g. at storage facility) and housekeeping.
- Maintaining cordial and professional relationships with members of the organization.
- Escorting students or external personnel in the field.
- Other duties as assigned by your manager.
What we are looking for :
- Someone who has the ability to:
- Follow specific procedures and maintain accurate logs.
- Lift, carry and handle the borehole drilling tools and equipment within occupationally-approved limits.
- Possess and maintain a license to operate light motor vehicles (G). Possession of DZ license an advantage.
- Demonstrate an aptitude for mechanical equipment servicing and maintenance.
- Professionally and ethically represent CNL to members of the public.
- Provide suggestion to leaders as opportunities for improvements to operations are observed.
- Collaborate with other team members to solve problems encountered during various work projects.
- Experience:
- Familiarity with radiation protection and safety related procedures.
- Heavy equipment (i.e., drill rig equipment) familiarity and ability to perform routine maintenance and troubleshooting.
- Knowledgeable about drilling methods, depth measurement and site preparation.
- Working knowledge of local and environmental regulations relating to drilling activities.
- Demonstrated experience with rotary and percussive drill rig operation an advantage.
- Education:
- Minimum of secondary school graduation.
- Security clearance eligibility required: Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom.
Working Conditions :
- Must be willing and able to wear respirators and other personal protective clothing and equipment as might be required by the job.
- Includes work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- This work involves heavy manual labor during the drilling and construction of wells and boreholes, operating heavy machinery.
- Some office/lab related work such data entry, making labels, preparing sample containers etc.
