Role Title: Careers and Industry Engagement Manager

Department: Marketing

Salary: £35,000 – £40,000 (commensurate to experience) plus performance-related bonus

Hours of Work: Full-Time

Contract Type: Permanent

Reporting to: Head of Operations

Location: The position is primarily based at North Gower Street or Chalk Farm in London, but there will be occasional travel required to the regional campuses.

Purpose of the Job

The British Academy of Jewellery (BAJ) is a place of high ambition, an institution whose growth is rapid but solidly grounded and with an aspiration for its graduates to contribute towards the economic, social and cultural benefit of the society. This exciting and varied new role will be responsible for developing, implementing, and evaluating a range of careers and employer engagement activities to support employment of Academy’s students. The post holder will work closely with other members of the student services and academic teams across the Academy, to ensure a joined-up approach to enhance careers services offered within the curriculum and centrally.

Key areas of responsibility

  • Help to develop, implement, and monitor the BAJ’s careers, employability, and industry engagement strategy.
  • To increase levels of employer engagement with existing and new organisations and support the Academy’s plans.
  • To liaise with employers in a range of settings to see how they can support the students, while promoting the Academy’s wider course offer.
  • To identify and provide support across Academy in delivering a professional careers guidance service to students and graduates through all effective routes (e.g. One-to-one, group work, e-communication etc); and to provide flexible support to staff.
  • To develop and deliver a programme of careers and employability events and workshops.
  • To ensure students can access work experience placements in their chose vacation to enhance their skills, knowledge and behaviours in a workplace setting.
  • To ensure the Academy continues to grow the apprenticeships provision and provide and excellent recruitment and selection services to employers within the regions it operates in.
  • To represent the Academy in a professional manner when dealing with external agencies and employers and present clear and accurate information on the offer or the service provided.
  • To record all activity within the Academy’s CRM/MIS and update all other relevant records.
  • Provide Academy students careers advice, learning and planning by coordinating the development of careers education and guidance at the Academy.
  • Contribute to the production of educational support materials in a variety of media to support delivery of these events in consultation with partners.
  • To take a lead in ensuring the implementation of Academy’s careers provision meets Gatsby Benchmarks.
  • To support the marketing team in creating and managing the careers pages on the website and elsewhere
  • Keep abreast of changing duties, policies and practice in this field and update the Academy’s strategy accordingly.
  • To work with the Senior Management Team to ensure that the service is compliant with the national quality standards, best practice and codes of conduct e.g. Matrix quality assessment frameworks.
  • Attend careers and employer events, often travelling alone, outside of normal office hours and to remote locations.

Any other duties as may be assigned from time to time by the Head of Operations or the members of the Senior Management Team. These duties are a guide to the work that the post holder will initially be required to undertake. They may be changed from time to time to meet changing circumstances and do not form part of the contract of employment.

Person Specification

We are looking for a self-starter with substantial experience of working within further and higher education (or a similar role within an educational setting) and of developing and implementing new initiatives. You will have excellent customer service, communication and organisational skills, and will be self-reliant with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Degree or equivalent level qualification

  • Willingness and ability to travel across the UK and EU (including remote sites) often carrying BAJ’s display equipment
  • Ability to satisfy a Disclosure & Barring Service check

Knowledge and Experience

  • Interest in and knowledge of current issues in the further and higher education sector including careers and employability agenda: the graduate labour market and implications for graduate recruitment. (Essential)
  • Experience and proven ability of working with young people. (Essential)
  • Knowledge of Word and other Microsoft packages (Essential)
  • Knowledge of databases and spreadsheets (Essential)
  • Experience of various aspects of marketing (Essential)
  • Experience of organising or helping to organise events (Desirable)
