A Nigerian man based abroad has cried out online after allegedly being harassed by police officers in Nigeria for having dreadlocks and refusing to pay a bribe.
This was revealed in a video shared on X (formerly Twitter) by @GossipMillNaija, where the man narrated his ordeal.
According to him, he was stopped by police who profiled him because of his dreadlocks, searched his belongings without cause, and demanded a bribe.
He said despite knowing what they were after, he refused to comply. The officers allegedly tried to intimidate him into yielding, but he stood his ground and called his country’s embassy to report the incident.
Upon learning about the embassy call, the officers reportedly let him go.
In his words: “Nigeria has finally happened to me. I got stopped, my stuff is being searched. They say they’re gonna take me to the station… simply because I have dreadlocks.”
“They were flexing their power and wouldn’t let us go. They wanted a bribe. I called the embassy and, long story short, they let us go. It was clear I wasn’t going to give them money.”
