Tyla has achieved another amazing milestone, earning three nominations in the Top Afrobeats Song category for the 2024 Billboard Music Awards.
The complete list of nominees for the awards has been released, and some of the nominations are unexpected.
Tyla has received multiple nominations, including Top R&B Artist, Top R&B Female Artist, and Top Afrobeats Artist.
The star of ‘Water’ leads the nominations for Top Afrobeats Song with her popular tracks from her debut album, ‘Tyla’, released on March 22, 2024.
The nominated songs are ‘Water’, ‘Truth or Dare’, and ‘Jump’. Tems is also in the running for her song, ‘Me & U’, along with Adam Port & Stryv featuring Malachiii for their song, ‘Move’.
This nomination follows her win in the Best Afrobeats category at the 2024 VMAs, which took place on September 11, 2024, at The USB Arena in New York for her popular single, ‘Water’.
Ayra Starr’s ‘Last Heartbreak Song’, Chris Brown’s ‘Sensational’ featuring Lojay and Davido, Usher’s ‘Ruin’ featuring Pheelz, and Tems’ ‘Love Me Jeje’ were also nominated in this category.
While accepting the Moonperson on stage, the South African artist highlighted the influence of her hit song. “The global impact of ‘Water’ shows that African music can be pop music too,” she stated.
“This is just so special, but also bittersweet because I know there’s a tendency to group all African artists under Afrobeats,” Tyla continued. “It’s a thing, and even though Afrobeats has run things and has opened so many doors for us, African music is so diverse. It’s more than just Afrobeats.”
