United States President Donald Trump has set tongues wagging after allegedly breaking the dress code at Pope Francis’ funeral in Rome.
The U.S. President was seen wearing a blue suit and a matching blue tie, which did not adhere to the strict dress guidelines set for the solemn event.
The Vatican’s dress code dictated that male attendees should wear a dark suit, long black tie, and a white shirt.
Additionally, shoes, long socks, coats, and umbrellas were to be black in color. Critics were quick to point out that Trump’s outfit, though formal, did not follow the prescribed attire, which was a sign of respect for the late Pontiff.
Many attendees, including world leaders, wore dark suits in compliance with the guidelines.
Some, however, like Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and U.S. President Joe Biden, also wore blue ties.
The majority, however, adhered to the all-black requirement, leading to criticisms of those who didn’t, including Trump.
Trump, who was seated in the front row with other foreign dignitaries and royalty, was the subject of ridicule from onlookers.
“Why is Trump the only male world leader who is wearing a blue suit?
‘Has he no sense of appropriacy? Shame on him,” one critic, Alison Graham said.
In addition to Trump, others were also noted for deviating from the dress code, including Prince William, who wore a dark navy suit, though he paired it with a black tie as required.
Zelensky, who was dressed in an all-black combat-style jacket and trousers, had also faced prior criticism for not wearing a suit during his official visit to the White House.
Melania Trump, who attended the funeral on her 55th birthday, wore a black coat, lace veil, gloves, and a simple diamond-studded cross pendant, adhering to the dress code for women, which required long black dresses, gloves, and veils.
