Position Profile
This position is open to various experience levels and offers excellent growth opportunities. The person selected will be expected to work on, and ultimately lead, roadway and/or drainage tasks on roadway projects including using MicroStation Open Roads Design (ORD) for development of Construction Plans. The position entrails collaboration with engineers in the Tallahassee and other Hanson offices. Projects will generally involve roadway and highway design projects for local governments, state departments of transportation, toll authorities, and private clients.
Essential Job Functions/Responsibilities:
Hanson is actively seeking talented Transportation Engineering Interns to join our growing offices. You will work with a team of engineers on design and production of all aspects of roadway design including horizontal and vertical alignments; intersection layout; corridor modeling; drainage design; ROW, cross sections; utility plans; signing & marking; and quantity/cost estimating. This position will entail communication with the Project Managers and Engineers on key issues and project progress.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Plan, design, and analyze data on roadway/transportation engineering projects.
- Prepare studies with associated drawings, maps, reports, and supporting documentation.
- Calculate quantities and prepare construction cost estimates.
- Prepare construction drawings.
- Prepare specifications.
- Conduct site visits and report findings to supervisory engineers and/or project managers
- Assist project managers and more experienced engineers in ensuring project/task schedules and budgets are met.
- Coordinate with team members to ensure timely and accurate document or drawing preparation Responsible for progressing knowledge through completion of various training initiatives: attending seminars; reviewing professional publications; and attending in-house training courses.
- Occasional travel may be required.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Technical Skills:
- Experience with Open Roads Design
- Familiarity with FDOT Design Documents (FDM, Standard Plans, Drainage Manual, etc.)
- Familiarity with AutoCAD and Civil 3D, desirable.
Soft Skills:
- Collaborating with senior technical staff.
- Must demonstrate the ability to present complex technical concepts to engineers, clients, and public stakeholders.
- Must be able to build effective relationships with internal and external client bases.
- Strong oral communication and technical writing skills.
- Ability to assist on project pursuits.
Education/Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering with EI license (or obtainable within 6 months)
- Minimum of 2 years of progressive roadway and/or drainage engineering experience with transportation projects.
- Familiarity with FDOT Drainage manual, Standard Plans Index, Florida Design Manual, Standard Specifications.

- Candidate must be willing to accept out-of-town travel assignments (not frequent).
