<p>Suzanne and Dominic Elumelu, who were originally from Onicha-Ukwu in the Aniocha North Local Government Area of Delta State, welcomed Elumelu into the world on March 22, 1963, in Jos, Plateau, Nigeria. Ndudi Elumelu, the minority leader in the Nigerian legislature, is one of his four siblings. He is Igbo by origin.</p>
<p>His humble middle-class upbringing prepared him for the perseverance and dedication that would eventually characterize his entrepreneurial attitude.</p>

<p>Before beginning his career as a salesman, Elumelu served as a corps member at the Nigerian Union Bank during his National Youth Service Corps in 1985. In 2005, Elumelu joined Allstates Trust Bank, and United Bank for Africa (UBA) was later purchased.</p>
<p>A small group of investors led by Elumelu took over a faltering Crystal Bank (later renamed Standard Trust Bank) in 1997. Within a few years, he made it profitable, and in 2005, he oversaw one of the biggest mergers in Sub-Saharan Africa’s banking industry when he bought United Bank for Africa (UBA).</p>
<p>As firm Managing Director, Elumelu oversaw the company’s transformation from a single-country banking firm to a pan-African bank with subsidiaries in 20 African nations, France, the United States, and the United Kingdom when Standard Trust Bank and United Bank for Africa merged in 2005. He eventually resigned in 2010.</p>
<p>Tony Elumelu is the chairman of the United Bank for Africa’s board. He established his family’s investment holding business, Heirs Holdings, in 2010. In the same year, Elumelu also founded the Tony Elumelu Foundation, an organization located in Africa that supports African entrepreneurship.</p>
<p>Heirs Holdings holds a variety of stakes in a variety of industries. Elumelu owns a majority stake in Transnational Corporation, a multinational conglomerate with operations in the energy, hospitality, and power sectors, through Heirs Holdings.</p>

<p>Elumelu established The Tony Elumelu Foundation after retiring from United Bank for Africa in 2010. In Africa, the Tony Elumelu Foundation encourages entrepreneurship. The economic theory of Africapitalism, which Elumelu introduced, is the foundation for the Tony Elumelu Foundation’s belief that the private sector is essential to Africa’s development. It holds that “the African private sector has the power to transform the continent through long-term investments, creating both economic prosperity and social wealth.”</p>
<p>Through the Tony Elumelu Foundation Entrepreneurship Program, a Pan-African entrepreneurship initiative aimed at empowering African entrepreneurs through a multi-year program of training, funding, and mentoring, Elumelu committed $100 million in 2015 to create 10,000 entrepreneurs throughout Africa over the following ten years.</p>
