Job Position: Studio Engineer Assistant

Job Purpose

  • Under general supervision, provides recording engineering and technology expertise for the studio and any other units as required.
  • Operates all recording equipment to record music, dialog, or sound effects of recording sessions and television shows at the studio.
  • Oversees the day to day maintenance of the studio and associated equipment.

Job Description

  • Before recording begins, the Studio Engineers must consults with producers and performers to understand their needs and then set up the studio to make it a reality. They prepare for live recording sessions, placing microphones and other recording equipment and using computers to program equipment. During the recording session, the Studio Engineer is chiefly responsible for getting clean, balanced recordings of all audio tracks.
  • Their first responsibility as Studio Engineers is to ensure that all the equipment is functioning properly so as not to waste the client’s time on substandard recordings and downtime in the studio. Upon arrival of the client, they assist in setting up their equipment in the studio for recording.
  • The Studio Engineer can be as involved with the creative process as the client wishes. The Studio Engineers can act as coaches, telling the client what to fix with each take. They can give musical advice on vocals and instruments and much more but must never be a hindrance to the creative process.
  • Studio Engineers are responsible for maintaining equipment. They keep records of the gear used in specific recordings. They also set up and take down special equipment for sessions, and they report equipment problems such as broken kit, components or defunct electronic circuitry. They either make repairs themselves, or they follow up to make sure a technician completes the repairs.
  • Studio Engineers must possess good Communications skills to facilitate discussions about equipment setups and client needs with managers and colleagues. Because Electronic systems to program equipment and edit audio and video recordings are used, engineers must have computer skills. Operating small knobs, dials and other console controls, as well as setting up equipment, calls for manual dexterity. Technical skills and the ability to solve problems are essential as well, because engineers must troubleshoot when equipment malfunctions or breaks, in addition to finding ways to correct sound problems quickly and under pressure.

A summary is as follow:

  • Ensuring performing talent is provided with all their recording requirements to the extent allowable by available studio equipment.
  • Ensure that studio equipment is used in a responsible manner and bring to management attention any damages caused during regular use of the studio facilities.
  • Ensure studio etiquette is follow during recording sessions.
  • Ensure equipment is cleaned and stored away adequately for later use.
  • Supervise and/or lead lower graded staff while they perform specific tasks in the recording studio and control room.
  • Determine equipment needs and makes appropriate request to his respective line manager; installs and/or supervises the installation of all studio equipment.
  • Remains current in all the relevant fields related to Studio recording, sound processing and Music editing both analogue and digital, software and hardware based
  • Sets up (and takes down) the studio equipment and records all live recording studio performances, special studio recording sessions, and any live radio/TV broadcasts using provided digital/analogue recording equipment hardware and software.
  • Maintain, repair and/or follow up on repairs of the studio’s audio-visual equipment.
  • Manage, maintain, clean and keep up-to-date the studio equipment store and its inventory. Keep accurate record of studio equipment in use and in storage. Keep records of any studio equipment out on loan or removed from stores.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

  • The Studio Engineers must have at a minimum a postsecondary education. Studio Engineers must also have an associate degree in audio or sound engineering from an accredited institution; this requirement may be substituted for a minimum of 2 to 3 years experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified above.
  • Good written and spoken English Language skills.
  • Ability gather data, compile information, and prepare weekly update reports.
  • Ability to set up, calibrate and operate studio recording equipment.
  • Ability to utilize advanced audio and/or video recording, mastering and editing techniques.
  • Ability to monitor and/or maintain quality control standards.
  • Knowledge of Studio hardware/software and recording Equipment.
  • Ability to react quickly to changing circumstances.
  • Ability to supervise and train assigned staff in his/her scope of responsibilities.
