Senators have officially passed a vote of confidence in the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, along with the entire leadership team of the 10th Senate.
This decision reflects the senators’ support for Akpabio’s leadership and their commitment to the legislative agenda under his guidance.
The vote of confidence which was passed on Thursday during plenary, followed closely on the heels of a false news report that circulated the previous day.
Some media platforms erroneously claimed that operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) had taken control of the National Assembly to thwart an alleged plan to impeach Senator Akpabio.
This misinformation created a wave of concern among lawmakers and the public, prompting the need for a clear demonstration of support for the Senate leadership.
By passing the confidence vote, the senators not only reaffirmed their commitment to Akpabio but also aimed to dispel any doubts regarding the stability and integrity of the Senate amidst the backdrop of sensationalized news.
Recall that the Senate President, during plenary session on Wednesday, debunked impeachment rumours, describing it as “fake news.”
Earlier on Wednesday, rumours on some social media platforms stated that the Senate president was set to be impeached and indicated that operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) had taken over the National Assembly premises to prevent a plan to impeach the officers from taking place.
The Senate spokesperson, Senator Yemi Adaramodu, in a statement, also dispelled impeachment rumours of Akpabio, describing it as “unacceptable and unspeakable.”
Also, the Special Adviser to the President on Senate Matters, Sen. Basheer Lado, in a reaction on Wednesday evening, spoke of the commitment of President Bola Tinubu to encourage a harmonious working relationship between the legislature and the executive.
