Come join our Public Works Streets and Drainage team as a Maintenance Worker. Under general supervision of the Streets and Drainage Superintendent, performs skilled operations of light duty equipment in the construction, repair and maintenance of City streets, sidewalks, driveways, signage, curbs and gutters along with other forms of storm drainage systems. Street and drainage work includes striping streets, repairing asphalt, pouring and finishing concrete, removing debris from grates, inlets and culverts. Employees in this class provide support in other Public Works functions, such as maintenance of City right of ways, clearing, collection and/or removal of trash, debris and brush, and special events as needed. Performs related work as directed.
Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Repairs streets, sidewalks and related areas due to potholes, damaged sidewalks and City construction activities.
- Maintains City streets, right of ways and drainage systems to include cleaning debris from grates, inlets and culverts, trimming overgrowth; installing, replacing and repairing signage, and repairing damaged sidewalks by operating various types of hand held, manual, gas or electrically powered tools such as push mower, weed eater, chain saw, etc.
- Maintains records concerning work orders, vehicle and equipment maintenance, inventory, etc.
- Under guidance of the Public Works Crew Leader and/or Streets and Drainage Superintendent and/ or Director of Public Works, ensures proper placement of traffic control devices, signs, and caution indicators per work site.
- Attends required safety meetings in accordance with department policy.
- Ability to follow oral and/or written instructions.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, fellow employees and the public.
- Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work hours is essential. Monday – Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
- Must be available for revolving weekly on-call schedule, weekends or night call-outs when deemed necessary.
- Required to remain available for immediate call-in due to any natural or man-made disaster, as directed by the City Manager.
MARGINAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Provides support to other Public Works functions as needed such as special events.
- May operate light duty equipment upon demonstrating essential skill levels for safe and effective operation of assigned equipment.
- Performs related work as directed.
Education, Training and Experience Guidelines
Six (6) months to one (1) year of work experience that demonstrates the ability to safely and effectively operate a variety of light duty equipment associated with streets maintenance. Or, an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Licenses and Certificates
- Valid Texas Class “C” or higher driver license must be maintained throughout employment.
- Must have and maintain an acceptable driving record throughout employment.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to comprehend and retain knowledge of the practices and materials utilized in the installation, maintenance, and restoration and repair of streets and drainage systems.
- Considerable working knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work.
- Working knowledge of safe and effective operation of light duty equipment and hand-held gas, diesel, or electrically powered tools used in the construction, maintenance, and repair of City streets, roadways, right of ways and drainage systems.
- Ability to understand and receive both oral and written instructions.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, fellow personnel, and outside departments and agencies with which the position interacts.
- Ability to effectively communicate with supervisors, fellow personnel, and outside departments and agencies with which the position interacts.
Age Requirement
Must be 18 years of age.
Physical and Sensory Requirements include but are not limited to:
- Some tasks involve frequent walking, standing; some lifting and carrying of moderate weight (12-20 pounds); and/or the operation of vehicles, shop, or hand tools in which manipulative skills and hand-eye coordination are important ingredients of safe/productive operations.
- Some tasks involve the regular, and at times sustained, performance of heavier tasks such as walking over rough/uneven surfaces, bending, stooping, working in confined spaces, and lifting/carrying heavy (20-50 pounds) items and occasionally heavier (100 pounds +) items.
- Some tasks may require color or sound perception and discrimination.
- Some tasks may require depth perception and discrimination.
- Some tasks may require visual perception and discrimination.
- Some tasks may require oral communications ability.
Environmental Requirements include but are not limited to:
- Exposure to adverse environmental conditions such as dirt, poison ivy and oak, dust or pollen.
- Exposure to extreme weather conditions including heat/cold, rain, sleet, ice and snow.
- Exposure to strong and/or toxic chemicals, strong odors and/or smoke.
