In a heartfelt moment that has since gone viral, Labour Party’s presidential candidate Peter Obi paused his journey to help an elderly woman whose goods had fallen while she struggled to board a bus. The touching incident was shared by @TheSerahIbrahim on X (formerly Twitter), capturing the compassion many Nigerians say is rare among political figures.

Obi was reportedly on his way to attend the burial of Nollywood veteran Mrs. Nkechi Winifred Nweje when he noticed the woman across the road. Struggling with a heavy bucket, she lost her balance, fell, and spilled her goods on the ground. Seeing this, Obi asked his driver to stop and turn back.

He personally checked on the woman, ensured she wasn’t injured, and then paid for the lost items — valued at ₦8,000. The woman, who makes just a modest ₦2,000 profit from selling the items, had feared the accident would leave her with nothing. Instead, she received not only financial assistance but also a warm hug from Obi after she asked for one with a smile.

Witnesses had already begun helping her gather what remained, but Obi’s unexpected support brought her to tears of joy. In a gesture of gratitude, she even tried to give him some of her wares — a moment many online found deeply moving.

The post by Serah Ibrahim didn’t just highlight Obi’s kindness but also served as a commentary on the harsh realities many Nigerians face daily. She called for leadership rooted in empathy and service, not luxury and detachment.

“A new Nigeria is POssible,” she concluded — a phrase that sparked further conversation among netizens who flooded the comment section with praise, hope, and a renewed call for compassionate governance.
