Manchester United have announced plans to construct a new 100,000-seater stadium near Old Trafford, with an estimated cost of £2 billion.
The project, led by co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, will see the demolition of the current 115-year-old Old Trafford, with the new facility serving as the centerpiece of a major regeneration of the Trafford Park area.
Designed by Foster and Partners, the stadium will feature a glass and steel “umbrella” canopy, supported by three trident-shaped towers.
The development will also include a public plaza, transport hub, and commercial spaces.
United will fund the stadium independently, while the UK government will support the wider regeneration project.
Upon completion, it is expected to create 92,000 jobs and generate £7.3 billion annually for the economy.
Construction is set to be completed by 2030, making the stadium the largest in the UK, surpassing Wembley’s 90,000 capacity, and the second-largest in Europe behind Barcelona’s Nou Camp.
