A Nigerian man, who was on his way home to pick up his pregnant wife and take her to the hospital, has shared a heartbreaking ordeal of how he lost his newborn baby after being stopped by the police.

According to him, the officers falsely labelled him a kidnapper, cultist, and armed robber, before extorting the sum of ₦300,000 from him.

The man made this known through a post on his page on the popular social media platform, X, formerly known as Twitter.

In his post, he explained that he was driving a new car to his house to pick up his heavily pregnant wife, who was already in labour.

However, on his way, he was intercepted by some police officers. Despite explaining that the car belonged to his mother and that the necessary paperwork was still being processed, the officers accused him of being a kidnapper, cultist, and armed robber.

He recounted how the officers physically assaulted him, handcuffed him, and took him to a police station.

After several hours, they only released him after extorting ₦300,000 from him.

Unfortunately, due to the delay caused by the incident, his wife was unable to get to the hospital on time, leading to the tragic loss of their baby.

HIS STATEMENT:

“@PoliceNG_CRU good morning, so this happened on Friday night on my way home to pick my pregnant wife cos she was due for labor. It’s a new car and the paperwork’s are in process, so they double-crossed me with a small white bus. About 3 to 4 hefty men came down and approached me. They asked me to open the door, I did, and they entered my car.”

The next thing they said was that I was a kidnapper, a cultist, and an armed robber. This was around 9pm. I told them it was my mom’s car and the paperwork was being processed already, but they asked me to hand over the car key, which I refused because I wasn’t sure if they were real Nigerian police.”

“They started rough-handling me — about 4 big men were slapping me because I refused to hand over the key. One of them started squeezing my penis and balls so I would surrender the key. At the end of the day, they were stronger than me and eventually took the key. They put me in cuffs, kept slapping and hitting me with guns, and bundled me into their small bus.”

“They drove me from Ajah Bridge to a police station at Awoyaya Area J, Elemoro Police Station, without any crime. They held me till around 11pm. Meanwhile, my wife was waiting for me and had to call someone else to take her to the hospital.”

They finally released me after 12 midnight after I paid ₦300,000 to bail myself because it was Friday and there would be no bail until Monday.”

“My wife lost our child because she couldn’t get to the hospital on time. Nigerian police, this is so uncalled for — a very wicked act.”

Following the emotional post, concerned individuals flooded the comment section to express their thoughts and sympathize with the grieving father.

@di_untouchable: “This is a case of kidnap and u mustn’t let them use mabinu to deceive u. They must be sentenced.”

@OlalekanAk35337: “How much is the share of Lagos state commissioner of police and the DPO of the station, they’re purposely sent out to extort the public.”

@YemshawP: “And also the receiver of the funds should be arrested. We need to start making it clear any organization or agencies receiving all of these bribe and extortions should be jailed.”

@ikenna_onugbolu: “OMG. What has the Nigerian police turned into? Kidnapping, extortionists, all the negatives you can think of. The have become worse than even during the military regime. Terrible.”
