A Nigerian man has accused Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, of deceit after claiming he lied about scrapping the Office of the First Lady during his tenure as Anambra State governor.
The accusation was made in a post shared via the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) by user @abdullahayofel, who referred to Obi as “419,” a slang term for fraud.
In a resurfaced video, Peter Obi is heard saying he abolished the Office of the First Lady while in office because it was receiving more funding than some ministries.
He added that although he loved his wife, he believed no one voted for her, so she should not hold such influence.
He said: “The Office of the First Lady was getting more money than some of our ministries. I shut it down because nobody voted for my wife — it’s me they voted for. Both of us live in the house; she’s my wife, and I love her.”
However, @abdullahayofel countered this statement, alleging that the Office of the First Lady did, in fact, exist during Obi’s administration.
He wrote: “It’s clear now to everyone that this man is 419. You had an Office of the First Lady during your tenure in Anambra.”
Adding to the debate, X’s Community Notes (AI fact-checking tool) supported the claim that Obi’s wife, Margaret Obi, held the role of First Lady during his time in office, further contradicting his statement.
