A police officer in Lagos, identified as Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Thompson, is facing internal scrutiny after reportedly sharing his bank account details with a suspect in a land dispute case under investigation.
The case centers on a disagreement between Hon. Temitope Ogungbo, a local government official serving as the Supervisor for Education in Ibeju Lekki, and his brother, Israel Balogun, over family land.
According to SaharaReporters, Ogungbo had filed a complaint with the police, prompting ASP Thompson, attached to the Elemoro Police Division, to summon Israel for questioning.
However, controversy erupted when, following the official invitation via text, Thompson allegedly sent another message containing his personal bank account information. The message read:
“That is the invitation I sent to him. Whatever is his response, I will forward it to you. This is my account number 2068831510, Zenith Bank, Thompson.”
The message has raised serious concerns, suggesting a possible attempt to solicit a bribe—an act that violates police conduct regulations.
Israel, in his account, accused Ogungbo of orchestrating a violent attack on him over the property dispute. He sustained stab wounds and required hospitalization. He further claimed that Temitope issued threats and claimed influence over both political and police authorities.
Despite filing a report with law enforcement, Israel said he was attacked again later that evening. Now recovering, he is appealing for public support and expressing fears of further violence or police partiality in the case.
As of now, the police have not issued an official statement regarding ASP Thompson’s alleged actions or the broader case.
