The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has officially appointed Eric Chelle as the new head coach of the Super Eagles.
This follows a recommendation by its Technical and Development Sub-Committee during a meeting on January 2, 2025.
The appointment was approved by the NFF Executive Committee on January 7.
Chelle, 47, brings a wealth of experience, having previously managed Mali’s senior national team.
Under his guidance, Mali reached the quarterfinals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Côte d’Ivoire, narrowly missing out on the semifinals after a 2-1 extra-time loss to the eventual champions.
His coaching résumé includes stints at clubs such as GS Consolat, FC Martigues, Boulogne, and MC Oran.
During his playing days, Chelle represented teams like Martigues, Valenciennes, Lens, Istres, and Chamois Niortais.
Chelle replaces Austine Eguavoen, who stepped in on an interim basis after Finidi George resigned following poor performances in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
The Super Eagles’ struggles included a draw against South Africa and a surprising defeat to Benin Republic.
Effective immediately, Chelle’s primary task will be to guide Nigeria to qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup finals.
