<p>Popular Nigerian lawyer, <a target="_blank" href="http://gistreel.com/tag/stan-alieke"><strong>Stan Alieke</strong></a>, has stated that DNA does not validate paternity in Igbo land.</p>
<p>He disclosed this via a post on his Instagram story on Monday.</p>
<p>Stan stated that what validates the <strong>paternity of a child</strong> in the Igbo land, is the bride price payed by the father.</p>
<p>According to him, if a man is yet to pay the <strong>bride price</strong> of a woman, any child that comes from that union is presumed to be fatherless.</p>
<p>He stated that the man will not be allowed to take the child until he has paid the bride price of the woman even if she is dead.</p>
<p>He wrote, “<em>Under the Igbo <strong>customary law,</strong> payment of bride price is what validates paternity and not even <strong>DNA</strong>.</em></p>
<p><em>This means that if your father is yet to pay the bride price on your mother, you will be presumed to be fatherless.</em></p>
<p><em>Also, you as a father of the child will not be allowed to take the child until you have paid the bride price on the mum even if the mum is dead.</em></p>
<p><em>A child that the father has not paid the mother’s bride price will have to take the surname of the mother.”</em></p>
