Jamie Carragher and Rio Ferdinand have strongly criticised Liverpool fans who booed Trent Alexander-Arnold during Sunday’s 2-2 draw against Arsenal.
The duo called the reaction “baffling” and disrespectful to a club legend.
Alexander-Arnold, who recently confirmed his decision to leave Liverpool after 21 years, was jeered as he came on in the 67th minute, replacing Conor Bradley.
The boos persisted every time he touched the ball, marking a sour note in what was only his second-last home appearance before a summer move to Real Madrid.
Carragher, speaking on Sky Sports, said: “That’s the story of the game. Booing one of your own players while they’re playing is not for me.
“Most players in that dressing room would jump at the chance to play for Real Madrid. It’s hard for supporters, but players move on. It doesn’t mean they love the club any less.”
Ferdinand echoed the sentiment online, posting: “I can’t believe Liverpool fans booing one of their own. Trent has won everything with you. Didn’t cost you a penny. It’s baffling.”
Alexander-Arnold has made 353 appearances for the Reds, scoring 23 goals and providing 92 assists.
His trophy haul includes two Premier League titles, a Champions League crown, and a Club World Cup.
Liverpool boss Arne Slot took a more measured view, noting that while boos were audible, much of the Anfield crowd applauded the defender during the game.
“Everyone has the right to their opinion,” Slot said. “But there were a lot of people who were really positive as well.”
Liverpool will face Crystal Palace on May 25 in what is expected to be Alexander-Arnold’s final Anfield appearance for the club.
