<p> Build, maintain, repair, and inspect freight cars by performing the following duties.</p>
<p> Extra Board</p>
<p><b>Responsibilities</b></p>
<ul>
<li>Build, maintain, dismantle, paint and inspect all freight cars, both wood and steel.</li>
<li>Inspect and measure parts to detect wear, misalignment, or other problems.</li>
<li>Pipe and inspection work in connection with air brake equipment on cars.</li>
<li>Inspecting, Testing and Repairing air brakes and freight car parts.</li>
<li>Operating punches and shears.</li>
<li>Painting, surfacing, lettering, cutting stencils, and removing paint.</li>
<li>Performs car inspections.</li>
<li>Performs oxy acetylene cutting and electric welding.</li>
<li>Visually inspects and tests machinery and equipment.</li>
<li>Listens for unusual sounds from machines or equipment to detect malfunction and discusses machine operation variations with supervisors or other maintenance workers to diagnose problem or repair machine.</li>
<li>Cleans and lubricates shafts, bearings, gears, and other parts of machinery.</li>

<p><b>EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE</b></p>
<p> Associate’s degree (A.S.) in applied sciences with emphasis on mechanical applications or equivalent experience as a rail car inspector or repairer may be considered in lieu of the A.S. degree at the discretion of the General Mechanical Superintendent; or equivalent combination of education and experience.</p>
<p><b>LANGUAGE SKILLS</b></p>
<p> Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.</p>
<p><b>MATHEMATICAL SKILLS</b></p>
<p> Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, us¬ing whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent.</p>
<p><b>REASONING ABILITY</b></p>
<p> Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.</p>
<p><b>OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES</b></p>
<p> Must be familiar with AAR, FRA, and DOT rules and regulations; must be able to speak and write English; must be qualified welder.</p>
<p> LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, OR REGISTRATIONS</p>
<p> Must have current driver’s license.</p>
