Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has urged rising star Kobbie Mainoo to prove he deserves a spot among the club’s top earners.

The 19-year-old midfielder, currently earning £20,000 a week, is seeking a significant pay rise to around £200,000 weekly amid interest from Chelsea.

Amorim, who leads United in their FA Cup clash against Arsenal on Sunday, acknowledged Mainoo’s talent but emphasized the need for further development.

“Kobbie has been improving a lot over the last few matches,” Amorim said. “But I think some feel he is the finished product — he is not.

“He’s really good but can be so much better. There’s immense potential for growth.”

Mainoo’s rise has been notable. Initially playing for United’s Under-21s last season, injuries to first-team players provided him an opportunity in November.

The midfielder capitalized on the chance, becoming a regular and scoring the decisive goal in United’s FA Cup final victory over Manchester City.

He also played a vital role in England’s Euro campaign, featuring in all but one game.

Despite his success, Mainoo faces stiff competition from summer signing Manuel Ugarte, whose form has been instrumental for United.

Ugarte impressed in last weekend’s 2-2 draw against Liverpool.

“Manu continues to be an aggressive player who is improving with the ball, playing between the lines,” Amorim noted.

“He’s in a crucial position and setting a good example for others.”
