President Bola Tinubu on Friday extended his condolences to the government and people of Plateau State following the passing of Lieutenant-General Jeremiah Useni (retd.), a former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
According to reports, the elder statesman died on Thursday, January 23, 2025, at the age of 82 after a prolonged illness. In a statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu also sympathized with Useni’s family, friends, military colleagues, and political associates.
The statement, titled ‘President Tinubu Mourns the Passing of Former FCT Minister, Lt. Gen. Jeremiah Useni,’ read in part:
“President Tinubu acknowledges General Useni’s courage and dedication throughout his military career, which inspired countless young officers to prioritize national interests over personal ambitions.
“The President also recognized Useni’s contributions to politics, serving as Deputy National Chairman of the All Nigeria Peoples Party and as Senator representing Plateau South Senatorial District.”
President Tinubu prayed for God Almighty to grant eternal rest to Useni’s soul and provide strength to his family.
The news of Useni’s death was earlier announced by Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State in a statement issued in Jos.
The governor described the late general as a remarkable leader whose contributions had a lasting impact on Nigeria’s security and political landscape.
“General Useni’s passing is a profound loss not only to his family but also to the Armed Forces, Plateau State, and the entire nation,” Governor Mutfwang stated, highlighting Useni’s commitment to service and leadership.
After his distinguished military career, Useni transitioned into politics, where he held the position of Deputy National Chairman of the All Nigeria Peoples Party. In 2015, he was elected Senator for Plateau South under the People’s Democratic Party, further solidifying his legacy as a dedicated servant of the nation.
