President Bola Tinubu is set to leave Abuja on Sunday for Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, where he will attend the Africa Heads of State Energy Summit scheduled for January 27-28, 2025.
This was disclosed in a statement issued on Saturday by Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, titled, “President Tinubu to Attend Africa Heads of State Energy Summit in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.”
The summit, organized by the Tanzanian government in partnership with the African Development Bank Group and the World Bank, aims to promote “Mission 300,” a program designed to provide electricity access to 300 million Africans by 2030.
In Dar es Salaam, African leaders, private sector representatives, development partners, and civil society groups will collaborate to accelerate energy access across the continent. According to the statement, the summit will serve as a platform for sharing knowledge, expertise, and resources to tackle Africa’s energy challenges.
Key topics of discussion include expanding energy access to underserved regions, promoting renewable energy, improving energy efficiency, and attracting private sector investments. The first day of the summit will feature ministerial-level presentations, where participating countries, including Nigeria, will outline their national energy strategies—referred to as “compacts”—to achieve universal energy access within five years. On the second day, Heads of State will endorse the Dar es Salaam Energy Declaration, which will outline a unified roadmap for achieving the Mission 300 objectives.
President Tinubu is expected to deliver a national statement reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to universal energy access and highlighting its leadership role in Africa’s energy sector. He will also showcase Nigeria’s ongoing clean energy initiatives and its integrated approach to energy delivery on the continent.
Accompanying Tinubu on the trip are the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu; the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu; the President’s Special Adviser on Energy, Olu Verheijen; and other senior government officials.
