Job title: Trustee / Board Member

Company: TPP Recruitment

Job description: Introduction

Hebden Bridge Arts (HBA), is one of Yorkshire’s longest-running arts organisations, with a reputation for delivering high-quality collaborations, partnerships, artwork, performances and events.

Our vision is for a year-round community focused, professionally supported programme of arts activities, events, performances, and sharing of work. We work with local organisations to engage under-served communities in creative projects. We are building on our existing partnerships and connecting with new groups of people across Calderdale, supporting them to create great artwork and present it to the public. Our work’s focus for the foreseeable future is climate emergency.

During 2023 we delivered , our environmental arts project, festival and arts trail made by and for the people of Calderdale. With Platinum Jubilee funding, the project was supported by 6 environmental experts, 9 creative project assistants, 37 volunteers, and 42 freelance creatives. We engaged with over 3300 people through over 100 workshops, walks, exhibitions, and events. This project worked with 9 Calderdale community groups, 4 local allotment groups, 3 youth organisations, and 31 community and venue partners.

We’re now looking for new board members (trustees of the charity) who will support our work as we move forward with our new strategy and vision.

Who are we looking for?

We are seeking trustees who: * Share the belief that the arts can change lives and shape the places where we live.

  • Bring fresh perspectives, energy, and enthusiasm for our future.
  • Understand the creative industries and the charity sector in Yorkshire and North West.
  • Care passionately about the environment and climate emergency.
  • Ideally live within travelling distance of Hebden Bridge to attend board meetings (weekday evenings) and more informal get-togethers and be present at events.
  • Can give the necessary time and effort over a minimum commitment of 3 years.
  • Understand the interests, skills, and needs of the diverse communities we serve.

We would love to hear from you if you have one of these particular skills: * Environmental Responsibility

  • Finance, business, or charity / third-sector background
  • Fundraising

Often people feel as though they’re not the sort of person who becomes a trustee; joining our board isn’t about fitting into a mould but being passionate, committed and ready to make a difference via the arts. If you do not currently feel that you have all the required skills and experience but are committed and willing to learn and grow – we welcome your application, providing you have the time to develop these skills and responsibilities.

What could you get out of becoming a trustee?

Becoming a trustee isn’t all about giving back. Your personal growth and professional development can also be enhanced by joining the Hebden Bridge Arts board, with the Charity Commission reporting that 99% of people said that they learned new skills when becoming trustees and 84% that the experience made them happier.

You’ll also get: * Induction, training, and reimbursable expenses.

  • Opportunities to make strategic decisions and develop new skills.
  • Opportunities to network with a wide range of professionals.
  • Influence to shape innovative projects.
  • The chance to improve the health and wellbeing of people and communities.

Being a trustee

As a trustee, your duties would be to: * Ensure the charity is carrying out its purposes for public benefit.

  • To comply with the charity’s governing documents and the law.
  • To contribute actively to the board in giving clear strategic direction, setting overall policy, defining goals, setting targets, and evaluating performance against those targets.
  • To understand, assess, and take strategic risks.
  • To act as an ambassador for the charity.
  • Ensuring fundraising is seen as a priority and contributing as appropriate.
  • To support Hebden Bridge Arts’ employees and volunteers.

Our trustees take an active role in the organisation and the expected time commitment is around 4-5 hours a month.

There are around six board meetings a year, together with the Annual General Meeting of the company. These are usually held on a weekday evening (Monday) from 7pm, in central Hebden Bridge. Online attendance is possible.

Recruitment to the board lasts for three years. We recognise that some people’s circumstances may preclude them from committing for a three-year period, but we ask that you can initially commit to a minimum of two years to ensure the stability and growth of our organisation.

Board members are legally responsible for the charity. Each board member is registered with Companies House as a director of the company and with the Charity Commission as a trustee and will be asked to confirm that there is no legal reason that will prevent them from registering as a director or acting as a trustee.
