Job title: Substation Higher Apprentice (North Manchester), Electricity Transmission

Company: National Grid

Job description: About the Role

Ensuring the future of electricity transmission

We don’t think of engineering as a job, we think of it as a legacy. A way of passing on a brighter energy future and keeping the lights on.

Would you like to be part of it?

How about working for a company that makes electricity happen for every single person in England and Wales? A company that invests billions in Net Zero and creating a brighter energy future?

How about being paid over £28,000 a year while you train…with free food, accommodation, and travel too?

Our three-year Higher Apprenticeship Substations programme will train you to become an engineer in one of our substations, where we transform high-voltage electricity into low-voltage electricity to make it usable for homes and businesses.

You’ll be learning about testing equipment, safety, protection and control of the system, substation refurbishment maintenance, technical support, problem diagnosis and fault fixing.

At the end of the three years’, you’ll have either a Foundation Degree in Electrical Power Engineering or an HNC in Electrical and Electronic Engineering . Most importantly, you’ll have a job waiting for you!

A job where the decisions you make will impact the transmission of electricity in England and Wales for the next 40 or 50 years. A job where you’ll be delivering maintenance work, replacing and refurbishing assets, fixing mechanical and electrical issues, and connecting new customers. A job that helps connect energy from renewable sources such as wind and solar farms, to the transmission network.

Eventually, you may even be commissioning new equipment onto the system and taking responsibility for the safety of your co-workers. If that sounds like something that you’d like to be part of, we’d be very interested in talking to you!

About You

You are driven and proactive with an appetite for continuous improvement. You know how to build on your existing knowledge and skills and have the enthusiasm to run with things and to try to make them better. You’re articulate and know how to communicate appropriately with a variety of people.

You are a flexible multitasker who can do multiple jobs at the same time and still pay great attention to detail. It’s doesn’t matter if you’re not academically dazzling; we want practical people with engineering mindsets who are really keen to apply themselves.

You’ll have two A-Levels, including Maths graded C or above, or a BTEC which includes a Maths module.

You’ll need a valid driving licence that permits you to drive in the UK 3 months before your start date.

You must be able to live away from home, primarily at our Eakring academy, in Nottinghamshire. You will also spend some of your time in Birmingham, studying for your Foundation Degree in Electrical Power Engineering or in Loughborough studying for your HNC in Electrical and Electronic Engineering.

What You’ll Get

We are proud to offer a starting salary of £28,332

As a first step to your career in the energy industry, our Higher Apprenticeship Programmes are like no other! You’ll gain an insight into how we work at National Grid, understand what a career with us can offer, and receive some great rewards and benefits:

Job title: Substation Craftsperson Advanced Apprentice (South Manchester), Electricity Transmission

Company: National Grid

Job description: About the Role

Work at the heart of National Grid

Would you like to work for a company that makes electricity happen for every single person in England and Wales? A company that invests billions in Net Zero and creating a brighter energy future?

On this apprenticeship you will be working towards a Level 3 EAL Subsidiary Diploma in Engineering Technologies.

You will also be paid over £21,000 a year while you train, with free food, accommodation, and travel.

Our three-year Advanced Apprenticeship Substations will train you to become a technician in one of our 347 substations. Our substations transform high-voltage electricity into low-voltage electricity, which can be used in homes and businesses. They also connect energy from renewable sources such as wind and solar farms, to the transmission network.

Our technicians play a vital role in looking after our substations. Without their careful maintenance the safe, reliable supply of electricity simply could not happen. This apprenticeship will allow you to become one of them.

You’ll be learning to do things like maintenance work on power transformers, main connections, and terminals. You’ll be repairing different types of joints and working with things such as air systems, batteries, and environmental battery charger systems.

Following strict safety guidelines, you will carry out the maintenance, repair, and monitoring of high-voltage substation equipment. This will include circuit breakers, transformers, disconnectors, compressors, and auxiliary systems.

As you can probably tell, these apprenticeships are for people who really want to get stuck in. If that sounds like it might be you, we’d be very interested in receiving your application.

About You

You are driven and proactive, with an appetite for continuous improvement. You know how to build on your existing knowledge and skills and have the enthusiasm to run with things and to try to make them better. You’re articulate and know how to communicate appropriately with different people.

You are a flexible multitasker who can do multiple jobs at the same time and still pay great attention to detail. It’s doesn’t matter if you’re not academically dazzling; we want practical people with engineering mindsets who are really keen to apply themselves.

Our Advanced Apprenticeships are for people who have five GCSEs, including passes in Maths and English graded 4/C or above.

By the end of your first year, you’ll need a driving licence that permits you to drive in the UK.

You must be able to live away from home; primarily at our Eakring academy in Nottinghamshire.

What You’ll Get

We are proud to offer a starting salary of £21,164.

As a first step to your career in the energy industry, our Advanced Apprenticeship Programmes are like no other! You’ll gain an insight into how we work at National Grid, understand what a career with us can offer, and receive some great rewards and benefits:

  • You’ll get 26 days annual leave plus statutory holidays
  • You could earn a £250 bonus, depending on performance
  • Our double-matched pension contribution scheme means your pension could be worth up to 18% of your salary
  • There is the option to buy discounted National Grid shares
  • Financial support for study relevant to your role is available
  • We will pay for one professional membership subscription.

Our My Discounts scheme offers discounts on everything from the weekly shop to your annual summer holidays. You’ll find savings on cinema tickets and at a range of high street retailers, including Sainsburys, John Lewis, Currys, Argos and Marks and Spencer.

Job title: PhD Studentship: Investigating the Role of Sheep and Goat in Interspecies Transmission of Pestiviruses in Cattle and Pig Populations in the UK

Company: University of Surrey

Job description: This is an exciting fully funded PhD studentship opportunity exploring virus host interaction and the role of sheep and goat in the transmission of pestiviruses to and impact on other important livestock species in the UK.

The , including Bovine viral diarrhoea virus (BVDV), Border disease virus (BDV) and Classical swine Fever virus (CSFV), are among the economically most important pathogens of livestock. Several newly emerged pestivirus species were introduced into cattle, pigs and wild ruminant populations during the last decade. BDV infections are sporadically reported in European pig population but as many infections are subclinical there is limited information about the true prevalence. Ovine pestiviruses continue to infect pigs and cattle population with potential to complicate CSF and BVD diagnosis, impact international trade and cause animal welfare issues and production losses for both the pig and cattle industry. Understanding the transmission dynamics and the role of sheep and goat in maintaining pestiviruses in cattle and pigs can inform strategies for effective and sustainable disease eradication programmes in the UK and support international trade.

During the PhD you will develop a diagnostic toolbox to differentiate between BDV, BVD and CSFV using various molecular techniques including whole genome sequencing, reverse genetics and using epidemiological methods to evaluate the transmission risk.

The project is jointly funded by the UK Animal Plant and Health Agency ( ) and the University of Surrey. The successful candidate will primarily work at APHA, Weybridge, Surrey. This project will require working in containment facilities, and health and security clearances will be required before starting the PhD.

Overall, the student will gain significant research experience in molecular virology, immunology, and epidemiology. The project will provide the student with a valuable opportunity to interact with a multidisciplinary research team including virologists, species experts and epidemiologists from APHA and the University of Surrey.

Supervisors

, , Dr Helen Crooke (APHA), .

Entry requirements

Open to candidates who pay UK/home rate fees. .

The PhD studentship is expected to commence in April 2024 but later start dates are possible.

You will need to meet the for our PhD programme.

Applicants with a degree in biomedical sciences or related subjects are welcomed if they have a strong interest in virus disease transmission, virus host range restriction and epidemiology. Veterinary graduates are also encouraged to apply. A master’s degree or equivalent research experience in a related subject is desirable. Experience in epidemiological approaches or qualitative methods or with livestock is useful but not essential.

How to apply

Applications should be submitted via the . In place of a research proposal, you should upload a document stating the title of the project that you wish to apply for and the name of the relevant supervisor.
