Tenure track position in molecular biology

The Department of Biology at University of Ottawa invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor. For this position, the successful candidate will demonstrate potential to build internationally-recognized and externally funded research program that fully engages trainees at all levels, building collaborations within and beyond our collegial, research-intensive department. Candidates must be able to teach in both French and English at the time of hiring at undergraduate and graduate levels. Exceptional candidates at Associate Professor level may also be considered. The starting date is July 1, 2024.

We are particularly interested in applicants with expertise in either new cellular models (organoids, 3D cultures) and/or classic and/or emerging invertebrate models. A research focus on the molecular mechanisms of aging, regeneration, and cell programming will be seen as an asset. However, any novel and/or developing research topic in the area of molecular and developmental genetics will also be considered in full.

The successful candidate will join a research-intensive, growing department of 40 researchers working in a wide range of fields, including cell and molecular biology, physiology, ecotoxicology, neuroscience, developmental biology, ecology and conservation, evolutionary biology, and bioinformatics. The Department maintains close collaborations with researchers at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute, University of Ottawa Brain and Mind Institute, Ottawa Heart Institute, Carleton University, federal science departments and agencies, and the Canadian Museum of Nature. The Faculty of Science provides access to core facilities for molecular biology, genomics, chemistry, microscopy and aquatic animal care to all of its members.

Title of the position: Assistant or Associate Professor

Duties: The responsibilities include: 1) maintaining a robust, externally funded research program; 2) supervision of graduate and undergraduate student thesis projects in the department; 3) teaching undergraduate and graduate courses that contribute to the bilingual (English-French) Biology or Biomedical Sciences curriculum; and 4) performing an active role within the department by contributing to administrative and academic activities of the Department, and Faculty of Science.

Rank and salary: Regular tenure-track academic appointment in the Faculty of Science, with a salary consistent with the collective agreement of the Association of Professors of the University of Ottawa. The salary scale for assistant professors starts at $89,622 (based on the scale in effect on May 1, 2023).

Required qualifications: PhD in Biology or a related discipline. Postdoctoral experience is expected. A demonstrated track record of research excellence must be clearly presented, along with commitment and strategies for teaching and graduate training. The successful applicant will be prepared to teach in at least one other area of design and supervise across all design areas with up to 10 student designers annually, and should be qualified to advise students as they work on all elements of design (costume, props, light, and projected media).

Position Summary

Applicants will have a growing record of established practice in their field, be able to establish/continue a successful program of creative activity/research and integrate this into teaching and learning opportunities for their students. Applicants must have the capacity to effectively teach at both undergraduate and graduate levels, and to engage in the collective life of the University through service and administrative roles. Faculty designers may design 1 – 2 elements annually for the Department’s main stage theatre season. Excellent funding opportunities are available for investigation/ experimentation/ research in the successful candidate’s area of expertise.

Courses in the Department of Drama are taught in a conservatory/atelier manner. Department productions range from at least 11 annual “shoestring” events (4 are ‘designed’) to a 4-play, fully mounted showcase season.

Designers interact with students and faculty from several other department programs and the successful candidate will work closely with 2 other design faculty members and 8 production staff members. Demonstrated capacity and commitment to working well within team situations are essential.

Applicants should show a willingness to incorporate or reflect Indigenous content, perspectives, or ways of teaching and learning into their curriculum where appropriate. Awareness and willingness to engage in other forms of inclusion (e.g. in training or inclusive pedagogy) are also desired.

Duties

The successful candidate will:

• Teach four courses per academic year (distributed across the year) including existing graduate and undergraduate courses, and will have the opportunity to develop and teach additional courses in their areas of expertise;
• Supervise graduate students and serve on graduate committees in the Design area, and elsewhere in the university;
• Maintain robust creative activity/ research within their area(s);
• Collaborate with sectors outside of academia, including community groups, non-profits, and industry; and
• Engage in active and effective service to the Department of Drama, the Faculty of Arts, the College of Social Sciences and Humanities, the University of Alberta, and external communities as appropriate to their career stage.

Qualifications

• An MFA in Theatre Design, or its equivalent in professional training and/or experience.
• Ability to teach in a professional theatre training program and to advise student designers in production.
• Substantial professional theatre experience.
• Capacity to work not only in lighting but also in at least one other area of design and advise in a third.
• Active engagement in creative activity/ research in the field

• Working knowledge of and/or training in Canadian theatre practices

The Fine Arts Building, with four performance spaces for Drama, was designed specifically for the teaching of theatre arts, music, design, and visual arts. POSITION TITLE: Latin American Archaeologist

DEPARTMENT SUMMARY:

The Department of Anthropology is housed in the College of Social Sciences and Interdisciplinary Studies, consisting of 11 academic departments, three independent and interdisciplinary academic programs, and several centers and institutes. The College is a congenial and cohesive unit both academically and administratively. Our campus community represents the broad diversity of our state, and we believe that all are enriched and unified by this diversity. To this end, we are particularly interested in receiving applications from a broad spectrum of qualified individuals with the commitment and ability to work with our diverse student population, staff, and faculty.

The Department of Anthropology maintains a four-field anthropology curriculum with nearly 200 majors, supported by 15 full-time faculty, various part-time instructors, and five full-time staff. It offers both minor and major baccalaureate degrees and a Master of Arts graduate degree program in anthropology with specialization in one of four sub-fields: socio-cultural, linguistic, archaeological, and biological anthropology. The undergraduate curriculum allows students to choose one of three degree concentrations: Culture, Language and Society (CLS); Archaeology and Biological Anthropology (ABA); or General (Integrative) Anthropology (GA). The Department also houses the Museum of Anthropology and Archaeological Curation Facility that maintain extensive ethnographic and archaeological collections. POSITION DETAILS:

This is a full-time tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor rank beginning with the Fall 2024 semester.

JOB DUTIES:

• Demonstrate a genuine interest in high quality teaching and mentoring of a diverse body of students;
• Teach an upper-division, General Education, large enrollment course related to Latin American archaeology;
• Develop and teach upper division major courses in support of the major and the ABA Concentration, including a regional prehistory and an anthropological theory course in their specialty;
• Work collaboratively with faculty to support and contribute to the department as a part of the ABA concentration, which is strongly grounded in evolutionary theory, and committed to empirically rigorous, scientific research and student training;
• Develop a focused and productive program of original research that demonstrates inclusivity in the involvement of students and respect for diversity in the content and/or focus of the research topics. Engage in dissemination of research;

Provide advising to a diverse body of undergraduate and graduate majors from a variety of backgrounds;

Provide service to the department, college, University, and community.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Education: Ph.D. in Anthropology or relevant discipline. ABD applicants will be considered. If ABD, all requirements for the doctoral degree must be completed by August 2024.
• Demonstrated experience or potential of high-quality teaching practices and/or mentoring diverse students
• Demonstrated expertise in Latin American prehistory sufficient to teach upper-division and graduate-level courses
• Evidence of ongoing field or laboratory work at one or more field sites and/or curatorial facilities in Latin America that involve community engagement
• Evidence of and potential for developing and disseminating original research in related areas
• Interest in curriculum and program development for training of students in Latin American archaeology with an emphasis on the social, political, economic, and/or ecological dimensions of hunter-gatherer or non-state agricultural societies
• Knowledge of and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusivity in pedagogy/educational practices

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Demonstrated experience or potential teaching undergraduate students
• Demonstrated experience or potential mentoring graduate students
• Demonstrated experience or potential supervising students in field and lab research
• Experience and/or interest in the social, political, economic, and/or ecological dimensions of hunter-gatherer or non-state agricultural societies
• Analytical specialization that complements and integrates effectively with existing faculty’s expertise and perspectives, including but not limited to ethnoarchaeology, bioarcheology, paleoethnobotany, palynology, geoarchaeology, geographic information systems (GIS), or materials analysis
• Experience and/or interest in teaching graduate-level seminars
