This is an alternate physician provider role in which the successful candidate will work with a limited medical license issued from the College of Physician and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA). The incumbent will work within the Department of Anesthesia at Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre under the direction of an attending and within a multidisciplinary team setting to deliver acute patient care. An Anesthesia Clinical Assistant assists a hospital or outpatient care center’s anesthesia team during surgical procedures and in nonsurgical settings such as Outpatient clinics and hospital care wards. Their primary duties include monitoring the status of patients, administering anesthesia, and providing emergency medical assistance as required. This posting is open only to those who have submitted a completed application package to the Alberta Clinical and Surgical Assistant Program (ACSAP) and have received confirmation that they are registered with ACSAP.

Description:

We are currently hiring 2 Clinical Assistant (CA) positions to support the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre Anesthesia Department. These positions represent an opportunity created for International Medical Graduates (IMGs) to be selected and prepared for work as Clinical Assistants in clinical departments. IMGs are landed immigrants, Canadian citizens and/or have employment authorization from the Canadian government and fulfill the program requirements. The main responsibility for an Anesthesia Clinical Assistant (CA) is to assist the anesthesiologist and care for patients before, during and after procedures. Prior to a procedure, the CA gathers all the information the anesthesiologist will need to prescribe the right type and dose of anesthesia. If the patient needs medications or interventions prior to the procedure, the CA orders or performs them. During the procedure, the CA administers the prescribed anesthesia under direct supervision and closely monitors patient vital signs. Following the procedure, the CA manages the care the patient receives until they’re out of recovery.

Required Qualifications:

Applicant must be either a landed immigrant (Permanent Resident) or a Canadian Citizen at the time of application. Applicants must be a graduate of a medical school located outside of Canada and the United States, listed in the Foundation of Advancement of International Medical Education and Research (FAIMER) International Medical Directory (IMED). Experience in an acute hospital-based care facility within the last 3 years. Preference will be given to applicants who have had active acute care surgical experience within the last 3 years. Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME): Must have completed a recognized orthopedic or general surgery residency program with a successful completion of an existing board exam. Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Examination Part I (MCCQE1): Applicants must have passed the MCC Qualifying Examination Part 1 prior to application. English Language Proficiency: As a requirement for licensure by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA), applicants must have taken the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) in Canada with minimum required scores of 7.0 in each of the components within 24 months prior to registration.
Additional Required Qualifications:

A successful candidate will possess certain skills that will allow them to work well with the rest of the anesthesiology team and effectively care for our patients, including: Scientific and medical knowledge to direct their activities when delivering patient care. Strong oral and written communication skills to collaborate with the care team and record patient data. Problem-solving skills to respond to emergency situations quickly. Critical thinking skills to diagnose symptoms patients are exhibiting and modify care to address them. Expertise in using key equipment including endotracheal tubes, anesthesia ventilators, U/S machines for regional anesthesia, IV-line insertions, video laryngoscopies. Onsite training will be provided to ensure familiarity with the equipment currently in use. Time management skills that will allow them to monitor multiple patients without sacrificing the quality of care.

Alcon Canada is looking for a Medical Science Liaison (Surgical) to join our Global Medical Affairs Team. MSLs serve as a strategic link between Alcon and our Scientific Partners as they are expected to develop and maintain peer-to-peer relationships with Eye Care Professionals (ECPs) /Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs) in the fields of in the field of Ophthalmic Surgery including Cataract, Refractive, Glaucoma and Vit/Ret.

The MSLs strategically support the development and appropriate use/adoption of Alcon products and therapies through evidence-based scientific exchange and by seeking external insights to further inform and shape company’s understanding of the products, therapeutic area, and clinical practice.

Additionally, the MSLs provide general medical/healthcare information in given therapeutic area(s) to practitioners and internal Alcon associates. MSLs also respond to unsolicited requests for Medical Information & queries.

The MSL will support the Western and Central Region, and it is ideal for the candidate to be living in the city of Toronto (or GTA).

In this role, you will:

Builds relationship and demonstrates the clinical outcome and benefits of company products to thought leaders, medical groups, government agencies, key opinion leaders and health systems with drug formularies, consumer-ready medical and dental products.

Educates and demonstrates the benefits of key products to clinical professors, teaching-hospital faculty, residents, and students.

Provides medical information to internal/external health sources such as the sales force, outside health professions, public, and government.

Explores and identifies sites for clinical trial in all stages of development.

Coordinates continuing education workshops, seminars, and programs for graduate physicians, pharmacists, and scientists.

Responds to unsolicited inquiries to establish and/or further the knowledge and understanding of marketed products and related topics.

Major Accountabilities:

Scientific Exchange/Insights – Maintain a thorough and detailed working knowledge of Alcon products, current medical/scientific research, and publications.

Engage in scientific discussions related to Alcon product data/research areas/ pipeline with Medical Experts (MEs), speakers & investigators by ensuring the appropriate dissemination of clinical and scientific information regarding marketed and pipeline products in a timely, compliant, and customer-focused manner.

Function as the Alcon medical speaker to present, as needed, at customer sites, congresses, symposia, and training events for up-to-date databased, scientific and clinical information on Alcon product(s).

Collect, analyze, and report insights that may affect company development plans/trial designs, launch and brand strategies/tactics.

Respond to unsolicited requests for scientific information.

Scientific Research Support −Contribute to the identification and recommendation of appropriate KOL involvement and participation in Alcon sponsored clinical trials (includes both pre- and post-market studies) from assigned territory.

Upon investigator request, liaise between potential researcher and Alcon on Investigator Initiated Trials (IITs) from inception to publication.

Medical Projects −Contribute to medical strategy/plan development by providing field insights.

Implement or support medical projects as field medical lead/contact aligned with Global or Regional Medical Affairs activities.

Support educational efforts, such as wet lab activities, by organizing such events and being onsite as necessary.

Internal Alcon Support – Provide medical support and training, as appropriate, (i.e., disease state and product) to colleagues (e.g. sales reps, Regulatory Affairs colleagues, etc.), but not as a substitute for those functional training groups.

Work with Med Info and Med Safety to help resolve escalated product complaints as well as Medical Safety issues.

Interface effectively with all other Medical Affairs functions, as well as other departments, including Commercial, QA, Research and Development, Regulatory Affairs, Market Access, etc.

Act as an interface between Medical Expert/ HCP and Alcon to provide up-to-date medical support on device-related issues to educate, diagnose, resolve and where applicable, escalate to local or regional Medical Affairs.

Integrity and Compliance −Works with Integrity and Compliance observing all laws, industry standards, and company policies.

Complies with all credentialing requirements for any healthcare institution (e.g., hospital) which is part of the MSL’s call plan, including, among other things, routine background checks, medical testing (i.e., Tuberculosis test) or proof of immunizations, training on facility policies, adherence to confidentiality, etc.

Requirements:

Education: Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent years of directly related experience (or high school+15 yrs; Assoc.+11 yrs; M.S.+4 yrs; PhD+3 yrs)

MD, OD, DO, or PhD in Ophthalmology or Optometry is strongly preferred

Experience: Minimum of 5 years of experience in the eyecare field (academia, industry, practice), with at least 3 years of those in the ophthalmic industry or clinical practice.

Travel Requirement: up to 75% within the territory (additional travel required within North America for conferences, educational events & training which may include evenings & weekends).

Preferred:

Knowledge of dry eye and experience in a customer-facing role is beneficial.

Solid knowledge of eye diseases, Ocular surgery (including diagnostics), and ocular health landscape.

Working knowledge of the Healthcare System and of the research procedures as well as the ICH guidelines, GCP, and other ethical guidelines.

Bilingual advanced written and verbal communication in English.
