Human Geography: Fully Funded ESRC Wales Graduate School for the Social Sciences (WGSSS) Studentship in the Human Geography Pathway

The Geography Department at Swansea is a vibrant and dynamic place for doctoral studies, and we host a large contingent of both domestic and international PhD students. The Human Geography staff at Swansea have a long history of successfully training PhD students for careers in the academy, as well as the public, private and third sectors. Our staff have a wide range of expertise, including in social theory, and cultural, urban, political, environmental, rural, and economic geography. We emphasise research that is both theoretically sophisticated and empirically situated. Many of us are actively recruiting PhD students and .

As part of the ESRC supported Welsh Graduate School in the Social Sciences, the Human Geography pathway is founded on longstanding institutional links between Swansea’s Department of Geography, Aberystwyth’s Department of Geography and Earth Sciences, and Cardiff’s School of Geography and Planning. All three departments collaborate extensively in funded research ventures, PhD supervision, and broader postgraduate training in cutting edge theories and methods of human geography.

PhD training is provided through a coordinated programme of standalone and residential workshops dedicated to advances in Human Geography Theory, and an annual cohort-building postgraduate conference with participation from across the pathway. The pathway also sponsors a peer-reviewed journal, Agoriad, with PhD students serving as editors. Should PhD students wish, they will have a chance to gain paid teaching experience, including as demonstrators or assisting with fieldtrips and seminars.

  • Facilitate the preparation of procurement plan
  • Receives approved Purchase Requisitions (PR) for procurement of goods and services
  • Initiate the review and validation of MSH Nigeria Procurement Manual
  • Review existing vendor database – Segregate vendors based on area of expertise: Preferred and Prequalified (for LTC) – based on the forgoing Initiate, develop and manage robust MSH Nigeria Vendor Database
  • Review all procurement from all PMI-S state offices before approval by the Director of Finance and Admin
  • Oversee a team of purchasing staff at Country Office and eight PMI-S State Offices
  • Tracks all PRs, for both local purchases and those requested through Home Office
  • Determines price reasonableness
  • Responsible for collection and analysis of proforma invoices and presents to the supervisor for further processing or approval;
  • Inquires immediately for more specifications from requesting units if the purchase request is not clearly specified and completed;
  • Oversee all cross cutting procurement across MSH Project (Office Move to a new location, Security Services, Internet Services, Cleaning Services, Payroll Management, MSH Audit and all other cross cutting procurements,)
  • Regularly update procurement tracker for all procurements
  • Support regional team from time to time on procurement reviews for other countries
  • Coordinate and manage the central procurement activities of MSH Country Office and Field Offices
  • Cascade relevant procurement information and processes to key staff for effectiveness across teams
  • Regularly updates the supervisor of all partial collection of the procured goods;
  • Informs the supervisor about prices and qualities of goods if purchases are not of routine nature.
  • Does quarterly or 6 month reviews of preapproved vendors for routine items such as office supplies, cleaning products, etc.
  • Capacity Building of Team.
  • Also performs other duties as requested by the immediate supervisor.
  • Inform supervisor immediately if asked to compromise integrity by any vendor or other.
  • Handles field office purchases when required;
  • Ensures that purchases are made in the best interests of the donor and MSH;
  • Assures delivery or pickup of PO for collection of goods;
  • Prepares weekly procurement status report and submits to the supervisor;
  • Ensure that systems are in place in country to ensure that operations are managed and staff act in full compliance with local laws, adhere to contract/award and donor requirements, and comply with MSH policies and standard operating procedures.

The Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine invites applications for a full-time, tenure track position at the assistant or associate professor level in the Department of Communication Sciences & Disorders (CSD). The Department of Communication Sciences & Disorders, one of three departments in the Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine, offers a course-based Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology (MScSLP), a two-year program designed to develop leaders in speech-language pathology through excellence in research, education and citizenship. The program is designed to provide students with the academic and clinical skills required to be eligible for certification through Speech-Language and Audiology Canada (SAC) and registration or licensure by provincial regulatory bodies. A thesis-based option within the MScSLP is also offered, as well as a combined MSc/PhD program that allows a select group of highly motivated students to complete the MScSLP and the PhD in rehabilitation sciences within a single integrated program of study. Faculty members of the CSD department are actively involved in the MSc and PhD thesis-based degree programs in Rehabilitation Science offered through the Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine.

The Department of CSD is among the largest speech-language pathology education programs in Canada. The Department currently consists of 11 tenure track and 7 academic teaching faculty members, supported by staff at the Department and Faculty level. Starting in Fall 2024, the MScSLP program will be offered in a distributed education model across 2 campuses in Alberta – Edmonton and Camrose. Approximately 90 students will be admitted in Fall 2024 across both campuses, with 20 of those seats reserved for students from Saskatchewan.

Faculty members have diverse research programs in areas including developmental language disorders and phonological development in children, literacy, multilingual language development, neurogenic communication disorders, speech science, hearing science and head and neck cancer rehabilitation. The department has community connections with several health care centres in Edmonton, including the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital. Faculty members have close connections (e.g., cross appointments and partnerships) with research and clinical institutes such as the , the and the .

The successful candidate will hold a PhD in Communication Sciences and Disorders or a related field, be an independent investigator or have the potential to develop a successful research program as an independent investigator in any of the Faculty and department’s areas of research excellence. Candidates with expertise in fluency, complex communication needs/autism spectrum disorders or dysphagia are encouraged to apply but all qualified candidates will be considered. The candidate will be a collaborative member of the department and faculty, and be committed to equity, diversity, inclusivity and Indigenous initiatives in research, teaching and service.

The Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Data Sciences (DS) team at Locus Robotics focuses on combining sophisticate software technologies with advances in various aspects of AI and DS disciplines such as Deep Learning & Deep Reinforcement Learning, Advanced Analytics, Generative AI, Decision Sciences, Operations Research, IoT/Simulation, Computational Perception, AI-based Goal Planning and Cloud-based software to provide novel, enabling, and breakthrough solutions for various facets of autonomous robotic and autonomous robot fleet operations.

The Senior Director role serves as a dynamic, hands-on, innovation minded leader in applying these technologies to the fascinating field of autonomous robots and their applications particularly in the domain of intralogistics and industrial automation.

Job Responsibilities:

This leader will work with internal teams and external customers to:

  • Provide leadership and/or subject matter expertise in developing various analytics related products (descriptive, predictive, and prescriptive analytics) as well as playing a critical role in contributing to the monetization of those products.
  • Define and lead full-scale projects, with the goal of quick market introduction leveraging agile methodologies.
  • Apply modern AI and machine learning methodologies to solve complex problems involving synthesis of solutions that can measurably streamline AMR operations.
  • Develop novel perception-based solutions, leveraging advances in sensor technology and sensor fusion algorithms and the power of AI and IoT at the edge and in the cloud, that can demonstrably increase the efficiency and effectiveness of highly autonomous robotic fleets.
  • Contribute to the application of deep learning and deep reinforcement learning in mobile robotic navigation, control & planning, and optimization algorithms (particularly involving Adaptive and Reinforcement Learning.)
  • Leverage advances in Generative AI, including LLMs, to enhance operations of autonomous robots.
  • Build a talented AI/ML, Big Data, Analytics, and computational perception organization infusing a culture of innovation and commercial aptitude in the operation of the team.
  • Partner with the DevOps team to establish a state of the art MLOps practice that can support innovation as well as customer deployment activities.

Qualifications

  • Master’s or PhD degree in Engineering, Mathematics, or Statistics preferably with a focus on Machine Learning and AI.
  • 10+ years of experience developing engineering/software solutions.
  • Experience leading teams and delivering projects on time and on budget.
  • 8+ years of experience in developing solutions in the field of Analytics, AI/ML, or computational perception.
  • 5+ years of experience leading AI/ML teams with demonstrated experience in supporting AI/ML products in production.
  • Expertise in applying Data Sciences, and/or AI-based computer vision and/or Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) & Deep Learning methodologies to a diverse set of commercial applications including, but not limited to, classification problems, prediction problems, sensor fusion and perception projects, optimization projects, navigation and control algorithms and problems.
  • Familiarity with Generative AI paradigm and LLM approaches.
  • Working knowledge of Agile methodologies.
  • Demonstrated ability to program in one or more high level languages (e.g., C++, Python, Java, C#) in conjunction with widely used AI/ML SDKs.
  • Experience with Cloud and Edge AI software development.
  • Experience identifying and working with key partners in the field.
  • Experience in managing operation of customer serving DS/AI products in production environments.
  • Familiarity with best practices for MLOps.

The successful candidate will be nominated for a Canada CIFAR Artificial Intelligence (CCAI) Chair by the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (Amii). The CCAI Chair includes research funding for at least five years. This position is part of a University of Alberta cluster hire in the intersection of Machine Learning and other areas, including Health, Energy and Indigenous Initiatives. The successful candidate will be expected to develop an innovative and robust externally funded research program, engage in, and develop domestic and international research networks, teach graduate and undergraduate classes in remote sensing, geographic information systems, and Earth/Environmental Sciences, supervise and mentor graduate and undergraduate students, and provide service to the Department, the Faculty, and the University, as well as to professional and external communities. The successful candidate will also become an Amii Fellow, joining a highly collegial institute of world-class Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning researchers, have access to Amii internal funding resources, administrative support, and a highly collaborative environment.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must hold a Ph.D. (or equivalent) in Earth Sciences, Environmental Sciences or an aligned discipline, with emphasis on applications of Remote Sensing and Machine Learning. The successful candidate will have:

  • A strong research record and research plan in Remote Sensing of Earth/Environmental Systems that involves making fundamental advances in machine learning approaches or fundamental advances in how machine learning is applied in Remote Sensing.
  • Proven ability and commitment to training the next generation of scientists in the field of Remote Sensing of Earth and Environmental Systems.

Department/Faculty Summary

The Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences (EAS) at the University of Alberta is a leading department with outstanding teaching and research in the fields of Environmental Earth Sciences, Geology, Paleontology, Human Geography, and Planning. Globally, the Earth sciences program is ranked 35th and the Geology program 5th according to Nature and the Centre for World University Rankings (CWUR), respectively. The department has an established program in applications of remote sensing and imaging spectroscopy in Earth/Environmental Sciences and hosts world class facilities at the Centre for Earth Observation Sciences (CEOS). These include two platforms for hyperspectral imaging of rock and soil samples, drill core, and vegetation (SisuROCK with VNIR and SWIR imaging spectrometers, longwave infrared camera 8000-12000 nm). The SWIR camera can be deployed in the field along with two point spectrometers (ASD FieldSpec 3m Agilent 4100 ExoScan FTIR) and several drones equipped with Lidar, thermal and spectral cameras. EAS has more than 50 faculty members, and over 120 graduate students, and is recognized for its scholarly achievement, excellence in teaching and research, and service to the community.

The Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (Amii) is one of three institutes named in the Pan-Canadian AI Strategy and consists of more than 35 artificial intelligence (AI) & machine learning (ML) researchers at the U of A, as well as CCAI Chairs at post-secondary institutions across Western Canada.
