The Opportunity

You will form an integral part of a friendly and supportive team based in Stantec’s Readingoffice. You will gain experience working on a wide variety of infrastructure projects, during all phases of the project life cycle – from feasibility through to construction and maintenance.

The team’s primary focus is transportation and development infrastructure, with a particular emphasis on designing improvements to public transport, cycling and walking infrastructure, developing sustainable drainage systems, deploying sustainable construction techniques and upgrading public infrastructure for new residential and/or urban regeneration projects.

Assisting with technical input into a variety of projects, your duties could include:

Getting involved in the development of concept, preliminary and detailed scheme designs.

Preparing design reports, specifications and technical notes.

Completing engineering design work and calculations, this could include preparing 3D design models of our projects, designing and evaluating drainage networks, modelling lighting levels or designing minor structures.

Researching the latest technologies and construction techniques and playing a key role in minimising the environmental impact of our projects.

Assisting in the management of Health and Safety risks and taking steps to proactively manage and mitigate potential issues.

Preparing cost estimates and assisting our clients to value engineer the best solutions within given time, cost and environmental constraints.

Developing an understanding of the various stakeholders involved in infrastructure design and management by collaborating with professionals from other organisations and disciplines.

Undertaking site visits and supporting our clients’ needs throughout the construction process.

About you

You will have achieved, or be on target to achieve, an Honours Degree in Civil Engineering.

This PhD studentship offers an opportunity to investigate the culture of female religious communities in the Middle Ages, through a study of their surviving manuscripts. We are inviting applicants to propose a project that explores any aspect of women’s conventual life, with the specific aim of bringing together kinds of sources that have rarely been discussed in combination. The themes and structure of the project are entirely open, provided the proposal is interdisciplinary and combines different types of manuscripts in novel, creative, and productive ways. At least some element of your research should concern institutions in the British Isles, and in your proposal, you would aim to draw principally on The British Library’s collections:

  • Manuscripts and Archives Collections Guides
  • Digitised Manuscripts
  • Catalogue of Illuminated Manuscripts
  • Archives and Manuscripts Catalogue

In your research for this project, you would work on collections alongside the BL’s curatorial staff and undertake specialised training at both the BL and at Cambridge, where you would be part of a large and collegial community of medievalists in a wide range of fields. The British Library is currently developing a major exhibition, Medieval Women, which is due to open in October 2024.
