Position

The Department of Biochemistry at the University of Alberta is looking for applicants to fill the position of Assistant Professor, additionally, the selected candidate will also be recommended for a Chair in Applications of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning to Biochemistry. We are particularly interested in applicants who will apply artificial intelligence and/or machine learning approaches to the understanding of macromolecular structure and interactions (such as protein-protein, protein-nucleic acid and protein-membrane interactions), drug design, biochemical and proteomic big data analysis, biomarker identification, and systems biology. The Department has existing strengths in structural biology including a new cryoEM facility, proteomics and mass spectrometry, super-resolution cell imaging, membrane protein structure/function, and drug discovery. The applicant will further benefit from interactions and support of our partner research institutes: the (CRINA); the (LKSIoV); the (NMHI); and the (WCHRI).

The successful candidate will be nominated for a Canada CIFAR Artificial Intelligence (CCAI) Chair that includes five years of initial research funding. This position is part of a University of Alberta cluster hire in the intersection of Machine Learning and other areas of existing research strength in, for example, Health, Energy, and Indigenous Initiatives in Health and the Humanities. The Department of Communication Sciences & Disorders, one of three departments in the Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine, offers a course-based Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology (MScSLP), a two-year program designed to develop leaders in speech-language pathology through excellence in research, education and citizenship. The program is designed to provide students with the academic and clinical skills required to be eligible for certification through Speech-Language and Audiology Canada (SAC) and registration or licensure by provincial regulatory bodies. A thesis-based option within the MScSLP is also offered, as well as a combined MSc/PhD program that allows a select group of highly motivated students to complete the MScSLP and the PhD in rehabilitation sciences within a single integrated program of study. Faculty members of the CSD department are actively involved in the MSc and PhD thesis-based degree programs in Rehabilitation Science offered through the Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine.

The Department of CSD is among the largest speech-language pathology education programs in Canada. The Department currently consists of 11 tenure track and 7 academic teaching faculty members, supported by staff at the Department and Faculty level. Starting in Fall 2024, the MScSLP program will be offered in a distributed education model across 2 campuses in Alberta – Edmonton and Camrose. Approximately 90 students will be admitted in Fall 2024 across both campuses, with 20 of those seats reserved for students from Saskatchewan.

Faculty members have diverse research programs in areas including developmental language disorders and phonological development in children, literacy, multilingual language development, neurogenic communication disorders, speech science, hearing science and head and neck cancer rehabilitation. The department has community connections with several health care centres in Edmonton, including the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital. The successful candidate will hold a PhD in Communication Sciences and Disorders or a related field, be an independent investigator or have the potential to develop a successful research program as an independent investigator in any of the Faculty and department’s areas of research excellence. POSITION: Assistant Professor of English: The Department of English invites applications for a tenure-track appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor. The person appointed to this position will teach in the areas of American literatures and cultural studies. Academic speciality may be any period, but teaching duties may span longer periods. Successful applications will demonstrate a general knowledge of American literature combined with strengths and commitments in linking local forms of cultural and literary production within histories of diasporic, ethnic, indigeneity, and/or migration studies. Other responsibilities will include academic advising of majors and service obligations to the department-including curricular development-and to the university. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

A Ph. D. in Literature, English, American Studies, or a related field is required. Other minimum qualifications include evidence of effective university teaching and evidence of promise for scholarly productivity.

Strong candidates will exhibit a record of scholarship and teaching pertaining to American literature, writ large, with specializations in African-American, Asian-American, Latino/a, American Indian literature, or Literature of the Americas. Prior to May 1, 2022, the University required all students, faculty, staff, and visitors (including contractors) to be fully vaccinated against Covid-19 as defined in Policy 129 – Covid-19 Vaccination. This policy was suspended effective May 1, 2022 but may be reinstated at any point in the future depending on public health guidelines and the recommendations of experts.
