Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

POSITION SUMMARY:
A Postdoctoral Research Associate position in nanoscale science & technologies is immediately available under the Professional Research Experience Program (PREP) between the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in Gaithersburg MD and the University of Maryland (UMD) in College Park MD. The successful candidate will be a UMD employee joining the NIST’s multidisciplinary team and conducting full-time research on NIST-Gaithersburg campus towards the development of a novel neutron interferometric measurements for quantum applications. In particular, the candidate will help to develop and nanofabricate a novel class of micro- and nanograting-based quantum devices and structures that will be a foundation for the next-generation neutron interferometers. The new devices will use spatially correlated spins, phase, linear and angular momentum of neutrons for high precision measurements of fundamental forces and materials structure. Three thrusts of enabling quantum applications will be pursued:

1: A vastly different technique of ultra-precise measurement of universal gravitational constant (the big “G”). The new measurement may not only shed the light on our understanding of gravity, but may assist searches for axion-like dark matter, as well as forces that lie outside our current knowledge of the universe.
2: Develop techniques for the generation and control of entangled neutron states. These methods will resolve quantum correlations in microscopically entangled matter by providing new ways to probe the local domain structure and the spin-coherence of topological materials at correlation lengths
1 micron.
3: Innovative neutron interferometric phase imaging that will enable unprecedented 3D mapping of nanoscale structure of almost any heterogeneous materials. This will allow to see nanoscale details in complex systems such as lithium batteries, 3D printed materials, tissue scaffolding, blood clots, ageing concrete, multiphase flow in colloidal and geological systems.

CANDIDATE RESPONSIBILITIES:
The successful candidate will conduct research at NIST-Gaithersburg campus on the development of enabling nanofabrication technologies for novel neutron-based precision measurements under the mentorship of PML Project Leader Dr. Nikolai Klimov and in collaboration with inter-disciplinary NIST team. The candidate will have an opportunity to:

  • Work on cutting-edge quantum science and technology projects
  • Work at the state-of-the-art NIST Center of Nanoscale Science and Technology NanoFab (https://www.nist.gov/cnst) including class-100 cleanroom facility
  • Be a member of a multidisciplinary collaboration team of scientists
  • Publish in prestigious scientific journals and present at technical conferences

Minimum Qualifications:

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ph.D. or equivalent experience in natural sciences or engineering
  • Substantial hands-on experience in micro-/nanofabrication and cleanroom processes
  • In-depth knowledge of advanced lithographic techniques, DRIE, thin-film deposition
  • MEMs/NEMs, microfluidics or photonics device modeling and nanofabrication is a plus
  • Strong publication record demonstrating original thinking, and ability to conduct research both independently, and collaboratively
  • Effective written and oral communication skills
  • Candidates must be able to provide proof of eligibility to work in the USA (no U.S. visas will be sponsored at this time)
