Job title: Rights Assistant, Penguin Random House Children’s

Company: Penguin Books

Job description: Are you interested in international book markets? What about children’s books? We are looking to recruit two Rights Assistants to join our world record-breaking team, both on a permanent basis.

The role: As a member of the Rights team, you will provide support to a team managing a high volume of work and overseeing the production of a large number of translated books known as co-editions.

Some of your responsibilities will include:

  • Coordinating foreign language print deals, from price requests to supplying files, checking foreign language editions, tracking deadlines and resolving queries
  • Maintaining accurate system and database records of sales and deals in Biblio (a publishing system)
  • Preparing presentations and managing production and manuscript schedules
  • Handling requests for material from customers and supporting price requests
  • Managing the process for securing final materials/assets for Territory Managers
  • Organising travel, meetings and sales materials for book fairs and international sales trips
  • Ad-hoc duties to the support team when needed

What you’ll bring: You’ll be the first point of contact for incoming queries from our vast range of publishers around the globe, so you’ll need strong communication and customer service skills. You’ll manage and help deliver a mixture of file sales and physical books to our customers and navigate tricker printings, so project management and problem-solving skills are needed. You’ll also need to be good at creating spreadsheets and managing supply of early material, manuscripts, covers and keeping the sales team updated with the submission calendar.

You’ll also have:

  • Strong organisation and prioritisation skills
  • The ability to juggle requests from multiple senior team members
  • A keen eye for detail

You don’t need publishing experience as we’ll provide training on publishing systems, so if you want to work with our children’s books and learn more about international markets, this role is for you.

The team: We publish a wide range of debut and award-winning authors and illustrators, including Stephen and Lucy Hawking, Femi Fadugba, Anthony Browne, Helen Oxenbury, Nathan Bryon and Dapo Adeola, as well global brands such as Tom Fletcher, Spot and Peter Rabbit.

About Penguin: We’re the UK’s largest publisher; made up of some 2,000 people and publishing over 1,500 books each year. Our doors are open to all kinds of talent. In a constantly evolving industry, we work hard to stretch the definition of the word publisher. Here, you’ll work with a breadth of talent who all play their part to make each of our books a success. Together, we make books for everyone because a book can change anyone.

How to apply: Please apply with your CV and Cover Letter by 23:59 on Tuesday 2nd January 2024.

Salary: You‘ll start on £26,500. Expect a £1,000 increase on your first anniversary in this role to reflect your growing contribution.

Competitive benefits package: Our people are the heart of our business, and we work hard to support a culture of responsibility and recognition.

Our benefits include:

  • Financial – discounted shopping, season ticket loan, rental deposit loan
  • Wellbeing – healthcare cash plan, employee assistance, gym loan
  • Lifestyle – taste card, tech scheme, free and discounted books

Hybrid working: We’re experimenting with a hybrid way of working that suits the needs of each team. While our offices across the UK are places to connect, collaborate and celebrate with colleagues, we recognise that flexibility around where you work is just as important. For this role, we expect that there will be meetings and activities that you will need to attend in person 3 days a week.
