GENERAL DUTIES (guideline only)

· Appropriate clinical responsibility for the care of patients delegated by the consultant to his/ her charge. Co responsibility for the proper functioning of the Paediatrics & Neonates department, including the supervision of more junior medical staff.

· Participation in the Registrar on call rota and to provide cover in exceptional circumstances for colleague’s absence.

· Attending clinics and assessing patients and formulating treatment decisions seeking advice from the consultant as appropriate.

· Attending sessions with the consultant and assisting or performing procedures as appropriate.

· Running of wards with consultant cover on site during the day, consultant off site after hours.

· Participation in clinical audit.

· Attendance at clinical meetings and case conferences as appropriate.

· Working within a multidisciplinary team.

· Teaching and training staff in other medical disciplines, nursing and support staff as appropriate.

· Communication with other team members as appropriate.

· Co-ordinating appropriate medical disciplines concerned with care for your speciality and communicating appropriately with general practitioners (GP’s) and community agencies.

· Assessment, care and treatment of patients presenting acutely to the speciality and referred to the speciality.

· Conducting daily ward rounds on inpatients under the consultant’s care, supervising the junior doctors whilst the patient is in their care.

· In conjunction with the admitting clinical teams and the wider health economy to develop and implement integrated Paediatrics & Neonates pathways throughout the hospital / trust.

· Participation in relevant audit for the department and quality assurance procedures.

· Abide by the clinical & Corporate Governance policies of the hospital/ trust.

· To make sure that the guidance from the GMC (General Medical Council) on Good Medical Practise is at the heart of your clinical practise.

· To keep up to date with Paediatrics & Neonates knowledge by Continuous Medical Education in the best interest of the patient and your personal development.

· Although a timetable will be provided, you will be expected to be flexible, in the interest of patient care and to meet the needs of the department as decided by the general manager and clinical lead for your department – Paediatrics & Neonates.

· To contribute to the wider corporate and organisational needs of the hospital / trust as appropriate.

In addition doctors will be required to:

· Adhere to hospital / trust procedures e.g. Health and Safety at Work, Equal Opportunities policies etc.

· Work to the hospital/ trusts values- Put Patients First, Take Ownership, Respect Others, Be Positive.

· Maintain personal and professional development to meet the changing needs of the job, to seek medical education as appropriate and encourage and support staff development and training as appropriate with your grade.

· Attend Statutory, essential and mandatory training.

· Respect the confidentiality of all matters relating to their employment and other members of staff. All Members of staff are required to comply with the requirements of the data protection act 1998.

JOB PLAN

To be discussed with the Clinical Lead of Paediatrics & Neonates and departmental service manager – all job plans are made with the agreement of the doctor and needs of the Paediatrics & Neonates department.

SALARY

The salary is based on the national salary scale as outlined in the Medical and Dental Terms and Conditions – £45,124 to £77,519 per annum not inclusive of extra hours, these are paid in addition to basic salary.

PERSONAL & PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

The post-holder will be required to keep himself / herself up-to-date with their relevant area of practise and be able to demonstrate this to the satisfaction of the hospital / trust / GMC.

The trust supports the requirements for continuing professional development as set down by the Royal College’s and is committed to providing time and financial support for these activities, this is also the same for GMC Revalidation.

STUDY LEAVE

Medical revalidation is the process by which the General Medical Council (GMC) confirms the continuation of a doctor’s licence to practise in the UK, provides greater assurance to patients, the public, employers and other healthcare professionals that licensed doctors are up-to-date and fit to practise. It is a key component of a range of measures designed to improve the quality of care for patients.

The Trust fully supports the GMC’s Revalidation agenda and we have a dedicated Revalidation Support Team who support the co-ordination of Revalidation and medical appraisal activity, providing personalised support for all doctors, which includes the facilitation of 360° Multi-Source Feedback, providing advice and guidance on completing appraisal documentation and sourcing evidence.

Professional/Study Leave

Professional or study leave is granted for postgraduate purposes approved by the Trust, and includes time off for study, research, teaching, examining, taking examinations, visiting clinics external to the Trust and attending professional conferences. Study leave allowance is a maximum of 30 days in a 3-year period.

Personal Responsibilities

Infection Control

All staff working for the Trust must promote and maintain the highest standards of Infection prevention and control practice at all times. This includes adhering to all Trust policies and procedures relating to Infection prevention and control. These policies include all staff must be ‘bare below the elbow’ when assessing or treating patients, and washing hands with antibacterial gel between patients. OVERVIEW

The hospital offers an excellent starting salary (dependent on experience) with pay enhancements for overtime, shift and out of hours work that you do, you average working week will be 39 hours per week plus overtime opportunities as and when required.

As a SHO/ Senior House Officer you will work closely with other junior doctors and a team of registrar doctors and Consultant within your department. You must maintain liaison with colleagues who are on duty immediately before and after you to ensure adequate communication and continuity of patient care. You will instruct nursing staff in the care of patients, also the professional technical staff in the investigations as required- those necessary for patient care and take patient care that other departments are fully acquainted with all necessary information.

DUTIES (guideline only)

  • To provide safe and effective care of patients.
  • You will have delegated responsibility for all the patients under the care of the Consultant to whose firm you are attached at the time, and for the patients of all the Consultants when undertaking emergency cover or when the other SHOs are off duty.
  • You will refer to the Consultant(s) when problems arise which are beyond your authority and/or experience, and will oversee and advise the House Officers.
  • Applying specialist knowledge and skills across a range of impairments, procedures and practices gained through practical experience, underpinned by theoretical knowledge.
  • Have a continuing responsibility for the care of patients and the functioning of the department.
  • Providing diagnosis and treatment for all categories of patient in the department.
  • To actively participate in staff meetings, forums and development programmes in order to support development of service and maintenance of high quality care.

Nurse & Midwifery Guide to Working in the UK –

OVERVIEW

Treats patients who are sick or injured, gives advice and emotional support to patients and their families, provides doctor assistance, and takes care of patient paperwork as per departmental needs and service.

To provide and maintain a high standard of nursing care for patients as well as providing nursing assistance to the doctors and other members of the primary healthcare team. The duties will include all tasks normally undertaken by an experienced RGN and in addition any roles agreed between the nurse and the doctors as appropriate, having regard to current training. The focus of the role is both the delivery of evidence-based practice for patients presenting with long term conditions and the provision of preventative health care to the practice population. As an autonomous practitioner the nurse is responsible for the care delivered, demonstrating critical thinking and skills in clinical decision-making in the management of patients. They will work collaboratively within the general practice team and the wider community teams to meet the needs of patients, support the delivery of policy and procedures and provide leadership where required.

DUTIES (guideline only)

  • Provide care to patients and residents based on their care plan outlined by their doctor
  • Accurately monitor and record observations on patients’ conditions
  • Monitor patients’ diet and exercise
  • Prepare patients and assist with treatments, surgery, or exams as needed
  • Participate in clinical improvements and offer ideas on clinical and non-clinical policies
  • Assist with the investigation of complaints by patients or family members
  • Manage stocks of supplies
  • Ensure storage and disposal of medication is carried out according to policy
  • Maintain accurate records of residents care, financial procedures, and medication administration

  • Consult and coordinate with other healthcare team members

NURSE SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS:

Essential:

  • At Least 1 to 8 years Year’s Nursing Experience on Band 6
  • Current registration with NMC
  • Educated to diploma level
  • Qualified practitioner / completed a minimum of one recognised level 6 Autonomous Practice Module relating to the diagnosis and management of either injuries or illness
  • Post Registration experience Good IT skills – ability to utilise appropriate electronic systems to accurately record data.
  • Ability to work autonomously without supervision. Ability to meet deadlines and to work under pressure.
  • Ability to adapt to the demands of a constantly changing environment.
  • Aware of accountability of own role and other roles in a nurse led service.
  • Knowledge of health promotion strategies and awareness of clinical governance issues within primary care.
  • Knowledge of patient group directions and associated policy.
  • Knowledge of the NMC Code of Conduct
  • Change-management skills and ability to support patients to change lifestyle.
  • Communication skills, both written and verbal. The ability to work as a member of a large multidisciplinary team

SALARY

The salary is based on the national salary scale.

GENERAL DUTIES (guideline only)

· Appropriate clinical responsibility for the care of patients delegated by the consultant to his/ her charge. Co responsibility for the proper functioning of the Paediatrics -Community department, including the supervision of more junior medical staff.

· Running of wards with consultant cover on site during the day, consultant off site after hours.

· Participation in clinical audit.

· Attendance at clinical meetings and case conferences as appropriate.

· Working within a multidisciplinary team.

· Co-ordinating appropriate medical disciplines concerned with care for your speciality and communicating appropriately with general practitioners (GP’s) and community agencies.

· Assessment, care and treatment of patients presenting acutely to the speciality and referred to the speciality.

· Participation in the Registrar on call rota and to provide cover in exceptional circumstances for colleague’s absence.

· Attending clinics and assessing patients and formulating treatment decisions seeking advice from the consultant as appropriate.

· Attending sessions with the consultant and assisting or performing procedures as appropriate.

· Conducting daily ward rounds on inpatients under the consultant’s care, supervising the junior doctors whilst the patient is in their care.

· Teaching and training staff in other medical disciplines, nursing and support staff as appropriate.

· Communication with other team members as appropriate.

· In conjunction with the admitting clinical teams and the wider health economy to develop and implement integrated Paediatrics -Community pathways throughout the hospital / trust.

· Participation in relevant audit for the department and quality assurance procedures.

· Abide by the clinical & Corporate Governance policies of the hospital/ trust.

· To make sure that the guidance from the GMC (General Medical Council) on Good Medical Practise is at the heart of your clinical practise.

· To keep up to date with Paediatrics -Community knowledge by Continuous Medical Education in the best interest of the patient and your personal development.

· Although a timetable will be provided, you will be expected to be flexible, in the interest of patient care and to meet the needs of the department as decided by the general manager and clinical lead for your department – Paediatrics -Community.

· To contribute to the wider corporate and organisational needs of the hospital / trust as appropriate.

In addition doctors will be required to:

· Adhere to hospital / trust procedures e.g. Health and Safety at Work, Equal Opportunities policies etc.

· Work to the hospital/ trusts values- Put Patients First, Take Ownership, Respect Others, Be Positive.

· Maintain personal and professional development to meet the changing needs of the job, to seek medical education as appropriate and encourage and support staff development and training as appropriate with your grade.

· Attend Statutory, essential and mandatory training.

· Respect the confidentiality of all matters relating to their employment and other members of staff. All Members of staff are required to comply with the requirements of the data protection act 1998.

JOB PLAN

To be discussed with the Clinical Lead of Paediatric Services and departmental service manager – all job plans are made with the agreement of the doctor and needs of the Paediatric department.

SALARY

The salary is based on the national salary scale as outlined in the Medical and Dental Terms and Conditions – £45,124 to £77,519 per annum not inclusive of extra hours, these are paid in addition to basic salary.

PERSONAL & PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

The post-holder will be required to keep himself / herself up-to-date with their relevant area of practise and be able to demonstrate this to the satisfaction of the hospital / trust / GMC.

The trust supports the requirements for continuing professional development as set down by the Royal College’s and is committed to providing time and financial support for these activities, this is also the same for GMC Revalidation.

STUDY LEAVE

Professional or study leave is granted for purposes approved by the trust and includes time off for study, research, teaching, examining, taking examinations, visiting clinics external (if required) to the hospital / trust and attending professional conferences. Study leave allowance is a maximum of 10 days per annum.

Nurse & Midwifery Guide to Working in the UK –

OVERVIEW

Treats patients who are sick or injured, gives advice and emotional support to patients and their families, provides doctor assistance, and takes care of patient paperwork as per departmental needs and service.

To provide and maintain a high standard of nursing care for patients as well as providing nursing assistance to the doctors and other members of the primary healthcare team. The duties will include all tasks normally undertaken by an experienced RGN and in addition any roles agreed between the nurse and the doctors as appropriate, having regard to current training. The focus of the role is both the delivery of evidence-based practice for patients presenting with long term conditions and the provision of preventative health care to the practice population. As an autonomous practitioner the nurse is responsible for the care delivered, demonstrating critical thinking and skills in clinical decision-making in the management of patients. They will work collaboratively within the general practice team and the wider community teams to meet the needs of patients, support the delivery of policy and procedures and provide leadership where required.

DUTIES (guideline only)

  • Provide care to patients and residents based on their care plan outlined by their doctor
  • Accurately monitor and record observations on patients’ conditions
  • Monitor patients’ diet and exercise
  • Prepare patients and assist with treatments, surgery, or exams as needed
  • Participate in clinical improvements and offer ideas on clinical and non-clinical policies
  • Assist with the investigation of complaints by patients or family members
  • Manage stocks of supplies
  • Ensure storage and disposal of medication is carried out according to policy
  • Maintain accurate records of residents care, financial procedures, and medication administration
  • Identify care planning needs
  • Carry out risk assessment
  • Record patients’ vital signs and medical information
  • Re-evaluate patient care plan as conditions change
  • Consult and coordinate with other healthcare team members
  • Direct or supervise less experienced nursing staff
  • Maintain continuing education and licensing requirements
  • Report any issues that arose during each shift
  • Gain the trust and confidence of each patient
  • Write patient care plans
  • Implement plans through tasks such as preparing patients for operations, wound treatment and monitoring pulse, blood pressure and temperature
  • Observe and record the condition of patients
  • Check and administer drugs and injections
  • Respond quickly to emergencies
  • Plan discharges from hospital and liaise with GPs and social workers
  • Reassure patients and their relatives and be good at communicating with them
  • Advocate on behalf of patients
  • Educate patients about their health – this may include running clinics and education sessions on topics such as diabetes, weight loss and quitting smoking- dependant on your area of speciality
  • Organise staff and prioritising busy workloads
  • Mentor student and junior nurses
  • Maintain patient records
  • Make ethical decisions related to consent and confidentiality.
  • Set up drips and blood transfusions
  • Assist with tests and evaluations
  • Carry out routine investigations

NURSE SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS:

Essential:

  • At Least 1 to 8 years Year’s Nursing Experience on Band 6
  • Current registration with NMC
  • Educated to diploma level
  • Qualified practitioner / completed a minimum of one recognised level 6 Autonomous Practice Module relating to the diagnosis and management of either injuries or illness
  • Post Registration experience Good IT skills – ability to utilise appropriate electronic systems to accurately record data.
  • Ability to work autonomously without supervision. Ability to meet deadlines and to work under pressure.
  • Ability to adapt to the demands of a constantly changing environment.
  • Aware of accountability of own role and other roles in a nurse led service.
  • Knowledge of health promotion strategies and awareness of clinical governance issues within primary care.
  • Knowledge of patient group directions and associated policy.
  • Knowledge of the NMC Code of Conduct
  • Change-management skills and ability to support patients to change lifestyle.
  • Communication skills, both written and verbal. The ability to work as a member of a large multidisciplinary team
  • The ability to communicate and interact with the public in a discreet and sensitive manner, recognising their needs for alternative methods and styles of communication Enthusiasm and a sense of humour
  • Able to work autonomously
  • Good time management skills

OVERTIME

Payments for unsocial hours are made to NHS staff

SALARY

The salary is based on the national salary scale.

A Fully qualified nurses start on salaries of £31,365 rising to £37,890 on Band 6 of the NHS Agenda for Change Pay Rates. Salaries in London attract a high-cost area supplement.
