The Community Ministries Worker provides holistic leadership and support to Community & Family Services for Bulkley Valley Ministry Unit according to The Salvation Army’s Mission, Vision, and Values.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Community & Family Services:

  • Through empathetic care, assists individuals in determining an appropriate and mutually agreed upon goal process; facilitates effective problem-solving behaviors of the guest/family.
  • Prepares and meets with guests to distribute food hampers and other items as required.
  • May assist with Community Feeding Program meal prep, clean-up, and serving.
  • Prepares and submits reports and program evaluations as required.

Foodbank Services:

  • Accurately records day-to-day happenings using appropriate methods.
  • May liaise with referral sources and other external agencies as needed (e.g., social assistance, RCMP, parole, urgent situations)
  • May serve as receptionist, answering phones promptly and as necessary.
  • May call in employees as required to fill in for last-minute employee absences.
  • Gives input into orientating, training, and evaluating staff.
  • Oversees the coffee service schedule.
  • Provide appropriate assistance to guests when required.

Administration, Program, and Other:

  • Notifies the Community Ministries Director of operational trends and makes recommendations as necessary.
  • Assists in completing kitchen and janitorial inventory and reports information to the Community Ministries Director.
  • Receives (and/or declines) and sorts/organizes non-monetary donations according to Food Safety regulations.
  • May have to arrange to discard items that are not usable per policy.
  • Maintains a clean and organized workspace, including the intake office and food storage room.
  • Maintains confidentiality with all guests and donor records.
  • May assist by thanking donors and providing written receipts and thank you cards or letters for all donations as appropriate.
  • Completes cleaning duties as assigned. (performs “Chore and Duty Log” throughout the workday)
  • May organize/help with special programs, including Christmas programs, and assist with fundraising as needed.
  • May assist in the kitchen and as needed.
  • Oversees/supervises activity during dining times for lunch and Community Feeding programs.
  • Participates in scheduled job-related training as required.
  • Communicates all related food allergy information to the Cook.
  • Communicates with other staff observation/concerns at staff meeting.
  • Ensures all contact with donors, staff, volunteers, and the general public is courteous and professional.
  • Always treat guests and co-workers with respect and dignity.
  • May supervise fellow workers, students, and/or volunteers.
  • Ensures proper safety precautions and hygiene standards are followed, including Universal Precautions.
  • May conduct inspection/security checks of property and grounds following policies and procedures.
  • Compliance with all safety procedures.
  • Ensures proper lifting, twisting, and reaching techniques are used during job performance.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned and required.

HOURS: Monday, Wednesday, and Friday 9:00AM-2:00PM

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

Education, Qualifications and Certifications:

The successful job applicant will have completed the following:

  • Completion of a formal post-secondary/college program of two academic years in a related field.
  • Food handling training is beneficial.
  • Alternate combination of education and experience may be considered.

Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements

The Incumbent must have the following experience before hiring:

  • At least two years of prior related experience, including experience in a wide range of social service programs and communicating orally and in writing with outside agencies.

Skills and Capabilities:

  • The Incumbent is required to lift to 15 pounds.
  • The job performance requires attentive listening (empathy to guests/volunteers/co-workers) and the ability to give directions.
  • Requires monitoring of the environment and attentiveness when interacting with guests.
  • Good team and interpersonal skills.
  • Good organizational skills.
  • Fluent in spoken and written English.
  • Willingness and ability to complete training as required by contract or The Salvation Army.
  • Willingness and ability to complete WHMIS & Universal Precautions training (to be completed during probation period).

PREFERRED SKILLS/CAPABILITIES:

A valid driver’s license and clean driver’s abstract will be considered an asset.

The Next Generation Ministries Coordinator is responsible for planning, coordinating, and facilitating the varied faith-based children and youth programs at the Willows Church & Family Life Centre. The Youth groups, preteen Sunday School, summer day camps and all other programming will run in accordance with the Salvation Army mission, vision, and values under the supervision of The Willows Church & Family Life Centre’s Corps Officers and Integrated Mission Supervisor. Coordinating volunteers, providing discipleship through mentoring, and leadership development will combine to give focused attention to strengthening and growing the programs that support the holistic development of children & youth including their spiritual formation.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Programming

  • Contributes to the spiritual and pastoral development of youth by mentorship, fellowship, discipleship, and encouragement.
  • Develops, implements, facilitates, and evaluates programs / ministries relevant to the youth of both the church and community: Plans and conducts both spiritual formation and fellowship activities for Senior Youth Group – grade 8-12 weekly.
  • Develops, implements, facilitates, and evaluates programs / ministries relevant to the children of both the church and community: oversee the weekly XP3 Preteen Sunday School class (teach or coordinate volunteers), plus supervise the Junior Youth Coordinator and host Junior Youth Group fellowship events biweekly (ages 8-12).
  • Act as our annual Summer Day Camp Coordinator to liaison with and supervise our summer students and volunteers to plan, prepare and host six weeks of Summer Day Camp and Upward soccer camp, including a week of Vacation Bible Schoo
  • Teaches and reinforces independent spiritual habits in young people (reading scripture, praying, acts of service) through mentorship and pastoral care, building partnerships and discipleship opportunities as students grow that will develop into young adult ministry.
  • Assists the Community Youth Outreach Coordinator with running our Landing program (Celebrate Recovery for teens) and helps to support connecting youth from outreach groups to potential involvement in faith-based church youth groups, Bible Studies, camping ministries, and Divisional Events
  • Facilitates the Red Cap Anger Management for Children & TASK Anger Skills for Teens programs online or in a school setting (training provided) and act as back up for our Community Youth Outreach Coordinator for community fairs and presentations in school settings.
  • Actively supports Divisional Youth events including FUSE weekend, Youth Leader’s Retreat, camping ministry and Youth Department Lunch & Learn events.

Volunteers

  • Cultivates, recruits, trains, supervises, supports, and develops volunteer leaders / mentors for this age group, ensuring compliance with security procedures, screening documentation and confidentiality.
  • Deal with volunteer complaints and incident reports.
  • Prepares, posts, and maintains volunteer schedule ensuring adequate coverage for all program functions, showing appreciation as needed.
  • Ensure completion of police checks for volunteers, statement of applicant for work with children and youth forms, and online abuse prevention training.

Administration

  • Participation in staff meetings and leadership program team meetings relating to the promotion of whole church events. Assist with the planning and facilitation of seasonal or special in-house programs including Messy Church, Wild Church, Children & Youth Sundays, and annual Church Retreat.
  • Compile statistics from events, following department budget, event and program planning, social media promotion and facilitating registration for programs and collecting program fees.
  • Coordinating transportation, set up and clean-up of activities and facility spaces as needed.
  • Determines needed programming supplies and secure their provision based on attendance levels in the program and forecast ahead for growth, planning for sustainability.
  • Provides occasional narrative and numerical data reports and present them to the corps officer for inclusion in annual impact statements in a timely, accurate and organized manner.
  • Perform other job- related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

Education/Certifications:

  • Completion of a formal post-secondary/college program of one academic year.
  • Diploma or degree in Children & Youth studies or Religious / Biblical Studies or related field an asset
  • First Aid / CPR or willingness to obtain.
  • Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Experience and Skilled Knowledge requirements:

  • A minimum of one year of related experience working with youth and children, particularly those with neurodiversity is required
  • Experience working with the Orange curriculum or other faith based curriculum an asset
  • Proficient in working in a computerized environment; Microsoft Office (i.e., Word, Excel and TEAMS), Canva, ZOOM platform and social media experience required
  • Training in crisis intervention, conflict resolution and mental health first aid for those who work with youth would be an asset (training can be provided).
  • Valid Driver’s License Class 5, a current copy of the driver’s abstract for review and verification that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required. Program vehicle is to be used for picking up supplies, attending programs or transporting youth.

Skills and Capabilities:

  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and The Willows Church & Family Life Centre: “Rooted in the love of Christ we offer holistic care in our community”.
  • Program facilitation and teaching skills including program planning, public speaking and classroom or group management skills are required
  • Well-developed interpersonal and relationship-building skills; ability to establish rapport and excellent communication with members, staff, and volunteers.
  • Demonstrate ability to work independently and also participate as an active and responsible team member in a cooperative environment
  • Lead by example by demonstrating a positive attitude, a strong work ethic and a willingness to work cooperatively with a wide range of personalities

  • Demonstrate sensitivity towards the needs of youth and those experiencing issues related to trauma, adverse childhood experiences or living in vulnerable situations
